Before you set your heart on a solid flat tappet cam, be aware that there are very few oils available any more that have enough zddp (zinc) in them to make a flat tappet cam live a long happy life. Roller stuff is much better suited to todays oils.

With plans for an 8" converter and plans to shift at 6,000 RPM I am not sure what to suggest. The whole combo seems to fit for a combo that will be shifted about 6500 -- I would look at a cam that is 240-245* @ .050 duration on a fairly tight 106-108* LSA.

Just my opinion.

I agree on the roller choice. I loved my solid Isky Z-35 until I wiped a lobe off. I think I had 4-6 hours on the newly built engine. That carb also seems a bit large but other much smarter people will soon chime in.

Get a ROLLER CAM !! Best money you will spend. My oppinion is something around 250@50 lift around .6". Carb sound a bit on the big side for a small block. If I were you I would go here to get cam advice:

click on the cam help link on the bottom.

But he can get Zinc containing oils so I wouldn't let that stop me!

And I'd also use the hole-foot lifters too.

-NO ROLLERS-

-Shift point i am going to pull shifter at 6000 which means it will be more like 6400

I looked at some Ultradyane & Comp SOLID FT:
Ultradyne
239/247 510/530 106ls
243/251 518/530 106ls

Comp
236/242 501/510 106ls
242/250 507/532 106ls
244/252 520/240 106ls

Also looked at 2 Ultradyne Hydraulic since they are pretty agressive for a hydraulic but i would not have to run a double spring like i would with the solids
231/239 485/507 106ls
239/247 507/530 106ls

Just wondering what you thought of these choices which would work best.

John I think you're on the right track with solid flat tappet. I've never owned a solid cam engine until my current one, which means I've never owned anything that revs like a banshee! I shift my 355 at around 7200. My specs with 1.6 rockers after .022 lash I/E:

Intake: .530 lift 254 duration @ .050
Exhaust: .554 lift 264 duration @ .050

My cam card doesn't say the lsa, but I think it's pretty tight. It's an Engine Pro grind # MC5853. I broke it in with with both springs, moly lube on the lobes and lifter feet, and Rotella T oil with some GM EOS added (which is getting hard to find).

I love it!!

"I've never owned anything that revs like a banshee!"

You ain't lived until you slowly put your foot into onna them and keep going up and up as your Buddy riding "shotgun" finally say's, "When are you gonna shift her??"

And you jeck at 7,500 rpm AND do it AGAIN!!

What a HOOT to me!!

howards tight lash ,only costs around $109 at competition products.
Lift: .534"/.542"
Adv. Duration: 286/294
Duration @ .050": 249/252
Lobe Center: 106
Tight lash O/T profile, great power coming off corners
or the comp 285b6 250/260 106lsa,

just run a bottle of break in lube and the lifters with the edm holes. Rollers are nice, but they also require a lot of money in a decent spring in order to rev. Solids rev and are cheap. But if one goes flat it does suck.

yes

SDPD quit selling it too, I check with them . Seems some local smaller dealers will have it , if your dealer has a part locater, they can check to see where and who has it.

i run the voodoo 284 in my 383 with 11.1 compression and i have shifted by accident at 6400 with no problems.it should turn more rpms ina 355 i highly recommend the voodoo 284.with th oil problem i run the penzoil 25w-50 racing oil.it has more then enough zinc content for flat tappet cams.the oil is not street legal so it is kinda hard to find.
