View Full Version : BBC and headers vs third gen iroc box
jks67SS396 Sep 11th, 07, 07:21 PM guys,
Im running a 540 CI BBC in my 67 (yet to fire it, but soon). I cant get my headers to clear the new third gen iroc box i installed on the drivers side. these are the dinky 1 3/4s compared to 2 1/8th that will go on there. the smaller tbes are hedman elites and the big pair care hooker comps
do i have to go custom or has anyone got this to work?
thanks

What mounts do you have?

TJS69 Sep 11th, 07, 08:38 PM What frame mounts (stands)? Not what engine mounts.
jks67SS396 Sep 11th, 07, 08:41 PM frame mounts as in BBC/SBC? this is an original BBC car and nothing has ever been changed, so im not sure if that answers your question.
thanks guys
TJS69 Sep 11th, 07, 08:46 PM Big block frame mounts (stands) offset the engine approximately 1" towards the passenger side. If yours is not offset, you don't have Big Block stands. The other possibility may be if your heads have raised exhaust ports and are lifting your headers to high. I know some new SBC heads have raised exhaust ports, I'm not sure on BBC.
jks67SS396 Sep 11th, 07, 08:51 PM yeah, mine look offset, its just that my big honking third gen box doesnt give much room to move around. i cant even get the headers in close to the ports. i definitely cant afford to dimple the crap out of the #5 tube.
any suggestions? custom headers??
thanks

The thirdgen box is EXACTLY the same dimensions as the saginaw power steering boxes that were original equipment. Look elsewhere.
Is your 540 a tall deck block?
what heads are on it, are you sure it doesn't have raised exhaust ports?
Lay a tape measure across the fenders. Is the air cleaner stud 1" closer to the passenger side?
Try running some searches on hedman headers and BBC's, see what others have run into.
jks67SS396 Sep 11th, 07, 09:41 PM hey jim,
yeah, i just looked at it, the air cleaner stud sits an inch to the right of the "ridge" that runs down the middle of the hood and cowl. and by a quick glance on the tape measure, it looks like it sits to the right too.
nah, 9.8" std deck big block. its a Dart Big M block. AFR 315 heads. guys say that headers bolt right up to those heads.
any other ideas?
TazJr800 Sep 11th, 07, 10:29 PM Although it is a manual steering car, I am running a 489 BBC in a 67 SS with the same AFR 315 Aluminum heads with Hooker's 2" Comp's. Only issues I have are plug wire clearance. Otherwise, all fits well.
BPOS Sep 11th, 07, 11:12 PM Are the headers you have designed to clear power steering?
Everett#2390 Sep 12th, 07, 05:05 AM You may have to lift up the engine and shove it over to the pass side to install the drvr header.
One of the first steps in engine replacement is to install drvr header first, then the engine. I do the same with my SBC.
