Hi Everyone,

I realize that this topic has been discussed before but I can't find the old thread. Anyhow, this weekend I am going to be applying POR-15 and Chassis Coat Black to the underside of my '69. After I am finished, I am going to paint the firewall before sliding the subframe back underneath it. I plan on just painting the the firewall with a spray can of paint. Any suggestions on a spray can manufacturer that provides the best and correct black for the firewall?

Thanks in advance.

In Jerry McNiesh's Z28 book he lists Kaylon 1613 for the 30% black gloss and Rustueom 7777 for more of a gloss, I think a 40%. BTW: If your using the Chassis Black from Eastwood its going to be to glossy for the floor pans. I did mine with it and then had to painted over it with the 7777.

Thanks for the tip. I used Chassis Coat black from POR-15 on the subframe. That came out a bit more glossy than I would have liked but not enough to be a big eye catcher.

I used the same POR-15 Chassis black on my subframe and I had to spray a matt clear coat because of the shine as well. I can't see how they can advertise this product to have the correct gloss ratio. I liked the texture of the Epoxy primer vrs the POR in the end.

I used POR-15 on my subframe and liked the way it turned out. There was some original paint still on the subframe and clearly it was just a shade less glossy than the POR-15. The original paint probably lost some of its characteristics over the last 38 years.

Good Luck

Now that the subframe and firewall are taken care of, I need to paint the heater core cover. I know that this is a bit more glossy than the firewall. I used Krylon 7777 on the firewall. Any suggestions on the heater core cover?

Any opinions? I was thinking just a straight up semi-gloss black.

I used "Details" semi-gloss on the firewall. It turned out very close to original. Maybe check how that compares to the 7777 and use one for it or the cover.

That will be too dull - the blower housing was originally gloss black (about 70%-80% gloss).

years ago year one sold gm reconditioning black paint, it cost about $65 for the gallon, then they stop selling it, i could never find any one esle who sold it, so i tried every satin black paint trying to match it. Rustoleum 7777 is about 98% exact match. you wont find anything closer than that.
just my 2 cents.

The 7777 came out really good on the firewall. I just hope that I get a good match on the heater core box.

I know Fred, I need to post some pictures. I wish I had a digital camera back when I bought the car. I have owned the car since I was 16 and I am now 33! Over the course of time me and my dad have replaced the quarter panels and tail panel with new GM sheetmetal, outer wheelhousings, truck floor and extensions as well as the passenger side rocker panel. The floor were solid so it was a good piece to start off with. I am very proud of the quality of work we did, we are both very anal when it comes to doing body work the right way. I just recently sandblasted, painted and rebuilt the subframe as well as painted the firewall. I promise to get some pics posted of the car and the subframe in the near future. By the way Fred, I have enjoyed looking a pics of your '69. Its helps to see a unmolested car such as yours to take cues from.
