NOTE FROM POPULAR MECHANICS: First it was a mysterious Swedish businessman in California. Then a member of the Russian parliament. Then a rally participant in Utah. Then a businessman in Seoul. Drivers of the insanely expensive ($1.5 million) and rare (less than 400 were made) Ferrari Enzo are, evidently, an exceedingly overconfident lot. Now you can add to that list actor and comedian Eddie Griffin, who totaled an Enzo at a racetrack yesterday while promoting his new car-porn flick, Redline. Thankfully, the crash was captured by alert news crews that were there to tape the promotional event. The car belonged to the movie’s producer, the distraught Daniel Sadek.
So why are these horrors being inflicted again and again on these poor, pricey cars? Because they’re essentially street-legal racecars, and as such are very, very hard to drive. They are not tuned for (more or less) everyday driving the way other Ferraris and similar exotics are—they are tuned for the racetrack and require deft manipulation of the throttle and steering, as well as the driver’s undivided attention, to keep on course. You can’t just toss it around and jam the gas to the floor at every corner. If there's an upside here, it's that non-stupid Enzo owners can enjoy watching their cars become even rarer by the day. If these reports are starting to trouble you, though, there is something you can do about it.––Eric Adams

DenRS Sep 15th, 07, 08:31 AM That looks like it could be fixed but I'm sure the replacement parts and labor will cost $$$. I saw an enzo at a car show. All I can say is wow. Usually people just ignore the one or two ferraris that show up, but when the enzo drove in, instant crowd around the car. Its not everyday you see such a rare car.
68zproject Sep 15th, 07, 08:48 AM He didn't get very far. I had a BMW M3 and went to a track day at PIR. The guy in front of me was a rookie and had an "instructor" with him. I was on his tail and he pushed a little to hard and lost it right in front of me on a corner. He went into the grass and didn't hurt anything, but it sure woke me up.
novaderrik Sep 15th, 07, 01:16 PM i don't think it's possible to "total" and Enzo- i believe that the car can be shipped back to the factory and "rebuilt" to factory specs, but it would probably cost more than buying the car brand new.
67FamilyFun Sep 15th, 07, 01:29 PM I bet the guy standing by the barrier pooped his pants! He couldn't have been more than 5 feet from the impact.
ChevyThunder Sep 15th, 07, 03:06 PM That was huge understeer because the guy was going way too fast! And whomever set that track up should be spanked as well ! All I know is my son and I flogged the Enzo for 5 hours at Thunderhill and the only thing we hit was the speed of sound :)
Oh .. and they have been going for around 900k for the last 4 years

Totalled = repairs costing more than the car is worth.
Chuck Sep 16th, 07, 11:26 AM Oh, I forgot: 1.5 million for a car? The most rad camaro I can concieve within sanity could be built for about 5% of that. I could have about 43 camaros of equal money pit depth as mine for 1.5 mil.
77wolf10.85 Sep 16th, 07, 11:36 AM The cameraman behind the barrier didnt flinch. Not even when the car rose or the barrier came towards him.

nikkisdad Sep 17th, 07, 05:23 PM Being rich does not automaticly make you a driver............poor either. Schooling might have prevented this. Cool though...........
novaderrik Sep 18th, 07, 02:16 AM Totalled = repairs costing more than the car is worth.
like they said in Hot Rod (or was it Car Craft?) when they drove "$4 million Hemi Cuda"- "it's impossible to total it, because it will never cost $4 million to fix it".
i think an Enzo is the same way- they can probably rebuild it for half of what it's worth.
ChevyThunder Sep 18th, 07, 03:05 AM I have never seen a car more expensive to fix than an enzo. very cool car but my son and I had more fun in the cheap Porsche GT2. people often make the mistake of thinking these super cars r easy to drive.
PROZ11 Sep 18th, 07, 08:09 AM That's an old story (03/26/07). The guy driving the car was actor Eddie Griffin. It wasn't even his Enzo. It belonged to Daniel Sadek, producer of the movie "Redline" Griffin was an actor in. They were promoting the movie. At least they got some news coverage. The promotion would not have made the news without that moron crashing the car.
NOTE TO MYSELF: When driving a car with lot's of horsepower, never nail the gas when you're in close proximity to, and pointed directly at a large concrete divider.
What a tool.
PS: I don't think the photographer pooped his pants.. Talk about holding your ground. Check out this picture... He's got some big ones IMO.

That's exactly right. It probably got shipped back to Italy for repairs. The damage wasn't that extensive.

Seeing that the photographer didnt flinch like you said, it makes me sort of wonder was the whole thing a staged publicity stunt. That car might have been some cheap "clone"

Don't be ridiculous. That guy works for the CIA and he detonated a shaped charge IED which stuck open the throttle...causing the accident. You can clearly see the glass exploding upwards! How else would that happen! Eddie Griffin had a "rendezvous" with Condeleeza Rice and knew the TRUTH about 9/11. This was a "message" to keep his mouth shut or you know what...It's all over the Internet...
A cheap "clone" for a publicity stunt...seriously...

The car was/is a real Enzo. After the crash it was set up outside of the theater for the premier. There are lots of detailed pictures of the crashed car on the Internet. Defiantly not a fake Enzo. A publicity stunt,..... possibly. But I doubt Griffin would be easily talked in point the car head on at a cement retainer and mashing the gas. Maybe. Who knows. That was a pretty hard lick. If you look at some of the other videos of the crash he was wearing street cloths, no safety gear, no helmet and a pair of sun glasses. I doubt he did it on purpose. It also shows him lose control a few other times, not near any retaining walls. Maybe, he's just an idiot.
I know it's hard to tell in the video but in these still shots from that day you can tell it was not a fake Enzo.

Chris396 Sep 21st, 07, 02:15 AM My cousin used to work for a Ferrari dealership in the parts dept. You wouldn't believe the costs to fix and maintain an Enzo. $35,000 brake jobs. $700 oil changes.
