Thinking of an 07 Colorado 4x4 4 door, Its got a (I think a volvo) 5 cld, Need it to plow 1/4 mile road 1.5 lane wide and the same in northern Wi. I wonder about If I had a problem with the engine that the chevy guys would not be too familiar. Would I take it to volvo Ha Ha. I wonder does that systems electrical measured in Bars like German stuff or just the sensors are in volts. I think for the small amount I use the plow the truck would be fine. I dont want the 1/2 ton due to a 45 mile commute. Anybody have one?

It's not a Volvo engine, it's GM built and designed. GM has a line of 3 engines that 85% of the parts interchange, an in-line 4cyl, 5cyl and 6cyl. The in-line 5 was introduced in 2004 with the Colorado and Canyon Trucks. The 4 and 6 were introduces a year or 2 before that. The 5cyl is also used in the Hummer H3. In 2004 the I5 was 3.5 L and has been bored to 3.7 where it is now. The development of the Colorado was a collaboration with Subaru Izuzu who markets the truck in some offshore countries.

I have a 2004 4 door 4x4 and it's a very sturdy vehicle chassis and drive-train wise. The body panels are thin and dent easy. The interior is plain but functional, you can get leather as an upgrade. I know they up scaled the newer models a little in the dash area.

In the off road department the 4 door 4x4 has a ground clearance problem. It's long wheel base and the way the frame hangs down under the body could have been better designed. The truck sits high and looks like it has all kinds of ground clearance but then there is the frame hanging there... I have been off-road with a Jeep club and went just about every where they did but I high centered a couple times and they had fun dragging me off. Since then I put a longer shackle on the rear and adjusted the torsion bars to give my truck about a 2" lift which really helps. I also removed a poorly designed aftermarket skid plate I had installed that cost me an inch of clearance and added 32" tires over the 31s that come stock.

My truck gets 15 mpg around town and 20-21 on the hwy with the lift and 32" tires. That's about what they claim. Funny thing the hummer H3 weighs almost 500lbs more and comes with 32" tires, it's advertised @ 20mpg around town...

Thanks very much for the info, I was sure misinformed. Ground clearance for me wont be a problem, Im using it mostly as driver and a little plowing once in a while.
Thanks Dennis

The Chevy Colorado/ GMC Canyon and Isuzu I-280/ I-350 are a joint effort between GM and Isuzu. Pretty much the same truck rebadged.

Thanks Ray - I knew that but when I typed my reply Subaru came out for some reason... There is a Chinese made Colorado clone out there that has nothing to do with GM or Izuzu...

I have an '06 crewcab w/the I5 engine. I echo what DjD says about the body. The mileage could be a little better. About 18.5combo and 25 MPG hiway. Of course mine has the 3.73 rear gears and 4 speed auto. It is built very well and is very quiet for a small truck. Once it starts reving the I5 moves out.

I cant belive they can clone something that fast, It realy gets me urked that our R.and D. goes out the window so fast. I bet they want to market it here too, lead paint and all.
25 on the hihway isnt too bad, I wish it would take E-85
Very intresting re: the swapability of parts.

No problem Dennis!

Plan on getting a newer daily driver/work truck next year. The colorados/canyons are popping up reasonably priced in my area( used, 4-door with a/c)so this is good reading for me.
