Decoding help?
I found a DZ engine with the DZ stamped on it but I could not fine the vin on the block.
Casting 3956618
Date 2 26 9
stamp V0331DZ

Crank 1178 with Notch in flange
ROds have the o stamped on them.
Main Caps have the N stamped on them.

numbers around oil filter
371
386
11313N
Any ideas where I can find the vin stamp on this block? DZ stamp appears to be orginal. Does any of this info other than the DZ stamp indicate this as a DZ block? Thanks

If it's not on the pad...look in the rough cast near the oil filter...Can be very hard to see!

I have had my engine out and on a stand several times in the 25+ years I have owned the car and have never found any hint of a partial vin near the oil filter. I have been told that when Chevrolet stopped doing the front engine pad stampings that some cars were pushed thru without vin stamps due to the line guys having trouble adapting to the new location. Curiously my engine is a Jan 69 engine like the one in question.

Maybe our "wizard", John Z could help us with this oddity.

I'm no "Wizard", but Kurt would have a better handle on the VIN location issue and its variations than I would.

It should be by the oil filter but can be very light.

The data does not support the statement that engines were not stamped when the location was changed. Lotsa early 69 blocks (including my Jan 69 block) has it stamped there.

Sometimes it is very hard to see and then with the right light and angle, a few number appear. It would be difficult, IMO, to see it when the engine is in the car especially when stamped lightly.

Multiple examinations and much wire brush time has not presented even a hint of one on mine!

Any guesses on the last digit?

There is a Z that was made that fits that incomplete VIN. All I have is a window sticker, no idea if the car still exists. Sold new in Denver.
