View Full Version : 1st Gen-4th Gen Back Seat Cover Question
jay'srs/ss Sep 24th, 07, 12:03 PM I'm on the last leg of reassembly for my interior. I've got some 4th Gen front seats out of 97. They are currently covered in tan leather, i'm having a leather company I deal with through work redo them in black leather, red stitches, and either black suede or perfarated inserts.
I have a few options to go with on the back seat. The company that's doing the front seats, only can do factory patterns. So I can't have them make skins that will match the front seats for the back seat. So I could have them make a 4th Gen back seat cover, and hope it fits. Which I don't think it will, due to the bottom cushion on the 4th Gen are 2 seperate cushions, 1st Gen is one of course. Or I could order the 4th Gen back seat covers, and have a upholstery shop modify those covers to fit the 1st Gen. Or have the front seats done by the leather company, and have an upholstery shop make a whole new seat cover for the back seat and hope they match.
I'll probably go with the 3rd option, just looking for some feedback. I was planning on having the door panels recovered to match the seats anyways, with the same red stitching and perf/suede inserts. So that'll probably work out better.
However, there's also the option of putting a 4th Gen Back Seat in my 67. I know it's been done before, but what do people do about the bare floor that would show up between the split bottom cushion? Most carpet kits i've seen don't extend past where the bottom cushion is mounted.
Thanks for any advice!
eville Sep 24th, 07, 12:13 PM I'd find someone who can sew a back seat to match. It's not that hard to do. Here's mine... It's not the best picture, but I can take more tonight if you want me to.

Wow that looks great! So you just had the rear seat recovered to match the fronts? If you don't mind me asking, how much did that set ya back? Seeing how yours looks makes me wanna get mine going even more!
eville Sep 24th, 07, 12:59 PM The work was done around 2000. I don't recall. I'll see if I have receipts at home.

For front & back seat? Just wanna make sure. If so, I'm getting a killer deal on actual leather seat covers, $550 for the fronts w/ custom stitching & everything.
eville Sep 24th, 07, 01:37 PM no, the work was done around year 2000. I don't recall how much it cost. It was done with headliner, door panels everything.

Oh okay. I thought $2k seemed high for recovering seats. :clonk:
yellow69RS Sep 24th, 07, 06:51 PM I saw someone on ebay selling seat covers in 1st gen houndstooth to fit 4th gen seats. That's what I want if they can do the black comfortweave.(instead of houndstooth)

jay'srs/ss Sep 25th, 07, 01:15 PM Hey eville,
How did you mount your front seats? Did you modify the rear of the brackets, or the floor pan? I was planning on having someone cut & reweld the rear of the brackets to line up with the stock holes. From your pic above it looks like you modified the floor pan.
eville Sep 25th, 07, 01:22 PM Super easy.
I took a piece of plate about 3" wide the width of the existing mounts one for the front and one for the back and drilled holes that line up between the existing holes. I used some countersink bolts and countersunk the hole to bolt the plates to the existing mounts. I then set the seats where I wanted them, marked the center of the mounting holes on the plates, drilled and tapped the holes and viola. the best part I was able to cheat the seat back a couple of inches to give my long legs a little extra room.
I studded the new mounts to make installation easier.

Ah I see. Do you happen to have any pics of the mounting plates you made?
eville Sep 25th, 07, 02:06 PM Sorry no pictures. I'll see if I can pull a seat out this weekend.

If it's not too much trouble for ya. I appreciate your help. :beers:
I just got the last of the sound deadening material to finish the interior. Then it'll just be reassembly and get the seats recovered and i'll be ready to roll. :hurray:
Mr. B Sep 25th, 07, 03:18 PM eville, excellent idea. I'm going to have to copy you. I just bought a set of 4th get seats off ebay. I like the stud idea a lot. I just changed the carpet, and putting the seats back it was a pain!
Did you bother to move the passenger seat back any?
eville Sep 25th, 07, 03:20 PM If I moved it back at all, it was to clear the existing mounting bolts. I didn't move it back to create more room. It's been so long, I don't really remember.
