I would have him show you how to butt weld some 20 or better yet 22 gauge sheet metal. Because of the age of these cars, ( 40 years old ) some of the metal is thinner then that in spots.

When he does it, pay close attention to the welder settings and type of gas he's using, like co2 or a combination of co2-argon mix.

And note the setting on the pressure gauge before he pulls the trigger, and after he starts welding, the actual flow on the gauge.

Also the size of wire, and how far he keeps the nozzle from the metal.

Take some notes, and let us know how he does.

Also a lap weld if you can.

I'll put my chart up here, then take that in with you, and you can check the gauges with a caliper or micrometer, pin it right down.

I'm sure all of us could learn something from this.

I find welding while on your back right up in front of your upper body a pain, and takes more skill and technique. But thats just me.

Don’t wear shorts or a sleeve-less shirt...and make sure someone is watching over you with some sort of extinguisher to save you when your hair ignites :) Have fun..its a great skill to learn.

Ask them to demonstrate sylicon bronze if they can and would this be good for some resto work? Would like to know what gas mix to use and wire size.

ya and dont wear mesh topped shoes. Cuz once the metal burns into your sock goood luck getting it out. I've got two big ole burn marks in my foot because of that. I wish someone had recorded the little dance I did when that happened. :D

Oh Yeah !! The shoes...how could I forget to mention them. I have done the dance also and have the scar(s) to prove it ! Nothing makes you dance more than a red hot piece of molten metal dropping in the side of your sneaker. Its the only time I'll dance.

Let me know how it was and if you think it was worth it. I can really use a welding class and that place isn't very far away. I was going to sign up for a class at the local vocational school, but it was a lot cheaper to buy a welder and try to teach myself. Turns out I'm a lousy teacher...

Def worth it I highly recomend it. our teacher was a retired welder who worked in the ship yards for 30 years. One thing I learnned for sure it that for this kind of work (sheet metal and light FAB) a 110 welder works well. He actually dragged one out and let us use it. They have a 110 hobbiest class that is 1/2 day that focuses on them.

If you coming let me know Its pratically in my back yard.

Hello All!!!

My brother and I took this same class today. It was very good, mostly all hands on with RON - the former shipyard Tig Welder. Picked up different techniques for a variety of metal thickness'.

We will be finishing up on all the welding on my car shortly.

Out of curiosity, what do they charge for that class? I'm not too far either (MA).
