View Full Version : Double Hump Heads
H-dog Jul 11th, 00, 11:24 AM I was just told that my 327 2bbl 210 hp engine has double hump heads. They showed me two small square raises in the casting just below the valve cover on the front of the heads. They said this is a 300 hp 327. http://www.camaros.net/forum/eek.gif Is this correct? With a 2bbl I doubt 300 hp. How about with a 4 bbl?

joe68rs Jul 11th, 00, 11:46 AM you were given bad information. i have the same heads you have. they do have two SQUARE humps at the front of the head. The double hump "camelback" Hi-Po heads have two small ROUNDED humps. If you need want more info on the heads you can pull the valve covers and get the casting #s.
FYI the 275HP 327 used the "camelback" heads, 4-barrel carb and different intake than the 210HP 327. Everthing else is same between the two though, cam, pistons, crank, etc. Fuel pump might be different too.

CA420 Jul 11th, 00, 12:26 PM There are a few casting numbers for camel hump heads I have 461's but they also have 461X but you have to pull the head to see the X under the exhaust runners. There are also some with small valves 1.94 as oppossed to the 2.02 and the older ones don't have accessory bolt holes.

H-dog Jul 12th, 00, 03:32 AM Hey Guys,
Thanks alot for the responses!! It amazes me as to how fast and how many people answer questions. I think this site is great! I just bought my 68 ragtop in May, and I'm really getting caught-up in all of this. I visit this site at least once every day if not more.
JBradway, that picture is worth a thousand words, as they say. THANKS.
Thanks again for helping me to reduce my ignorance! http://www.camaros.net/forum/redface.gif http://www.camaros.net/forum/biggrin.gif

duroracer Apr 3rd, 01, 04:39 PM I have been looking for a set of these camel back heads to use for racing. I never been able to find a set, and this evening Just out of pure curiosity I looked at a motor I have in a 65 impala SS, and wouldn't you know it, there they were. They are genuine rounded camel backs. Exactly like the picture you had posted above.
Now my question is that how rare are these heads, and do I want to take the risk of racing them and cracking one? How much is a set like this worth?
golopogos Apr 3rd, 01, 06:18 PM Duroracer I would check the casting #. I believe that the 461x are the hard ones to find the port volumes are larger. there are also a 462, 291, 292, 186, 187, 492 castings. keep in mind that some have accesory holes and some don't. Also there are the 2.02 and 1.94 heads out there, and the combustion chambers are different sizes. for more info check out MORTEC
