View Full Version : Engine Bay Clean Up
Myfirst 69SS Sep 28th, 07, 08:11 AM Any suggestion on cleaing the engine bay. I was thinking spraying down the aprons and subframe with "super clean" and hosing it off then blow drying it with the leaf blower. Everything under there is newly painted but now dirty/oily from some mechanical work.
Any other suggestions?
BERRY251 Sep 28th, 07, 08:23 AM Steam cleaner!
JimM Sep 28th, 07, 08:30 AM I spray it down with gunk or some sort of cleaning solvent that won't hurt the paint.
I used to use the pressure washer, but haven't dared since I repainted the engine compartment, garden hose sprayer only now.
The leaf blower works GREATS to dry things off, and drive all the water out of the nooks and cranny's!

I agree with Jim. That is way I just did mine a couple of months back, and it turned out great! I used no water, except on a rag, to wipe it down once it was clean.
69 L 89 RAG Sep 28th, 07, 10:28 AM If you use water to clean try to stay away from the distributor & electrical compoments you may end up with a starting problem. I covered the dist. with plastic. GOOD LUCK ! :beers:
zdld17 Sep 28th, 07, 11:17 AM Sometimes, a bucket mixture of laundry detergent and varsol , 50/50 mix, sprayed on with a air suction sprayer will help. Varsol gets the oily off , detergent gets the dirt and oil film. Dawn works too.
JohnZ Sep 28th, 07, 04:58 PM Be careful with Castrol "Super Clean"; used full-strength, it removes paint.
Myfirst 69SS Sep 28th, 07, 05:08 PM Thanks JohnZ. I know it burns my skin so good point any other suggestions? I was thinking mabe Simple Green?
eville Sep 28th, 07, 05:10 PM i use Original Dawn to make a soapy rag (car wash bucket). But my paint is pretty shiny and clean already.
yellow69RS Sep 28th, 07, 09:41 PM I like a product called Steam in a black can. I dislike any Gunk product that says "Engine Brite" on the label.
