There is a local ad that said that they have a 68 Z28 motor for sale.hmmm! Well After calling and asking about it I was beginning to think NOT. But I went to see just in case.

The guy said I came out of a numbers matching 68 Z28 and was replaced with a 502.
Oh yeah, $800 minus carb.
Well I went to look and there are some numbers on the front motot pad but in a wierd order. First it was 0112 a big space them VO then another space where numbers should be and the a very hard to read looks like AE.
What is this motor? The casting number is that of a 68 block but the head numbers where right up to the "3" at the end instead of a "1".
The heads have two square humps on the not rounded. There was a H30 cast into the back of the block and had a 4 bolt main mark on the back of the block.

What is it?
Thanks
EB

How about posting the complete block and head casting numbers? The entire casting dates couldn't hurt either.

I will need to go back and get more info. Tell me what to look for and where. Are you saying get the casting date off of the back or ?
Also my wife went with me to look and she said the the "A" looksed more like an "M" to her. The guy selling it said the same thing.
Thanks

to get head casting numbers you need to remove valve covers to get there numbers.

Get block cast # behind the heads, even the date stamp. Go back to engine stamp pad. Look real well, Take photo if you can. Record the head casting numbers , under the valve covers. Photos, photos , photos. Hint, if its a 68 302, It should have some mention of a MO stamp. Someone correct me if I am off on a 68.

The head casting was 3917293, I think that is a 327 and there was no MO on it but I was looking at the VO then a long blank area and then two letters that are very hard to read, Maybe By Design, I am not acusing him of altering the number pad but it would not be the first time!!!
I had to check, would have made a good story if it was real.

P.S. What does the two square humps on the front of the heads mean?
Thanks

Thanks to everyone for the feedback so fast. I am going to do what the seller ask me to do, Keep him updated on what engine I thought it was. That way some poor soul does not end up with a 210 hp 327 "Z28" motor Ha! Ha!

Thanks again

Remember, that's what the block started as. Who knows what's in it now.....
