So I'm about to pull and reinstall the engine/tranny on my 68.

I've got this old leveler that scares me when I use it. So I'm thinking about replacing it.

I was looking at what Summit offers and can't figure out why the 1500# version is cheaper than the 1250# version.

Do any of you guys have one of these or can you make a recommendation?

I would get the 1250 lb version
the handle is bigger and the leveling bar is longer, overall it looks like a better piece to me

I have option #2 (the cheaper one) and did not like the way it worked when I installed my 408" about 7 weeks back.

The handle came unscrewed. Turning the handle was a MAJOR chore. Overall, it really did not give me 'ease of installation' I was looking for.

i have the engine leveler also. i actually prefer the engine lift plate as it is much easier

I agree, but go one step further. I got an adjustable engine plate, works awesome.

I use the chain method. Cheap and fully adjustable. :-)

dont waste your money on the 1250 lb one.its junk.the 1500 lb rig is better if you fix the handle issue.if you want a really good one,Mac Tools has one that looks like the 1500 lb unit that you list.you use a 1inch socket instead of a handle.I bought one 15 years ago and it has worked perfectly on everything.dont know if they still sell it or not.i will look and let you know.as for summits 1250 lb unit,a customer left his at our shop because he was afraid to use it because it looked flimsy and with any weight on it you cant turn the handle.he,s going to borrow my Mac Tools unit when he puts his engine back in.

I just bought a Torin one from advanced auto around $35-$40. Haven't used it yet. It does have a handle though

DenRS,
i used the same one from Pep Boys to put in my 350 small block mated to TKO500 and it worked fine, put a little grease on the screw threads. the little knob on the handle did come loose, but no big deal.

I don't see how anyone can trust any intake manifold lifting plate on those 4 little 5/16 studs, into aluminum body threads, with a TKO behind it. I would never sleep well thinking about the installation.

A grade 5 5/16-18 bolt has a 75% yield strength of about 3615#. Four of them would support about 14,460#. This is somewhat more than the average engine/trans combo.

The pullout resistance of a 5/6" thread into cast aluminum is about 7000#.

i watched a test on these intake lift plates. pretty interesting and i would trust them with a BBC mateded to a sm465 and a np203 hanging off it. but it does look scary with all that hanging off an intake lift plate

The weak link is the hoist and the chain.

Thanks for the reassurance. Its tough putting the tko in , with the engine in, while laying on your back, with car on jacks , but I have done it many times in my 60's so maybe I will try this installation as a unit, with this manifold lift plate and leveller, hopefully my last time. I have an Edlebrock manifold so I know the material is good.
