: Differences in RS headlights and exposed headlights?
4birdman Oct 1st, 07, 08:05 AM How much difference is there? I just purchased a 68 Camaro for the PatriotDream.org project and it has the exposed headlights. I am converting the car to RS headlights, so I don't know how much of the current headlight setup I need to keep. Most of the current brackets and buckets are there and in good shape. I was going to blast them and powdercoat them and put them up for sale to fund the conversion. I just need to know how much I need to keep or if I can pretty much sell everything there.
Everett#2390 Oct 1st, 07, 08:19 AM RS headlamp buckets are sunk further into the fender compared to std head lamp buckets.
One can buy a conversion kit to mount RS buckets into a std fender.
4birdman Oct 1st, 07, 08:32 AM So pretty much all the existing stuff I have now I will not need for the conversion?
Everett#2390 Oct 1st, 07, 09:14 AM True, anything relating to std set-up, no you won't need it. However, the std valance panel will have to be holed for parking lamps and a RS hood latch will be needed as the handle moves from the upper center of the grill to the lower valance hole.
4birdman Oct 1st, 07, 09:24 AM I need to get a valance anyway, so that is no big deal. I'll see if I can dig up an RS latch somewhere.
I can use the std fenders with the adapter brackets though, right?
angelglo Oct 1st, 07, 09:28 AM and to do it correctly, you also need rs fenders.
Everett#2390 Oct 1st, 07, 09:29 AM I believe so. Maybe other members who have used the brackets will chime in.
4birdman Oct 1st, 07, 09:34 AM I may just sell the standard fenders and buy new RS fenders. The car already has new rear quarters, tail panel, doors, floor pans, trunk pan, firewall, dash panel, trunk panel, and hood. Might as well finish out the package.
BPOS Oct 1st, 07, 10:11 AM I did the conversion my 69 - I'm not positive if the same holds true for a 68.
And I'm also not sure on the terminology, so bear with me. The "bucket" is what I refer to as the part that locates and adjusts the sealed beam. This part was the same for the RS and the standard, and I re-used them on the conversion. The "bracket" is the part that bolts to the core support and holds the "bucket". This part is RS specific and will not be reused.
Look at one one of the supplier's calalogs, such as Rick's First Gen, and compare part number for both standard and RS, and you will have a clearer picture of what parts you can reuse and which parts you must replace.
If you're made out of money, then buy new fenders. If - like me - you're not, reuse your standard fenders and buy the conversion brackets. They're about $30 for both and simply bolt, rivet or weld onto your standard fenders. I bolted mine on. They're very simple, and when the project is done, they're hidden.
