View Full Version : What's inside a 69 headrest?
Eric Kammerer Oct 2nd, 07, 11:12 AM Does anyone have pics of a 69 headrest without the covers?
I'm curious what I'm going to find under the headrest covers, for a couple of reasons.
1. I need to recover the ones I have. I don't see repro foams, so I assume that whatever condition mine are in under the cover is what I have to deal with. I'd just like to see the inside because if uncovering them destroys the foam, I may live with the little split I have.
2. I want to see what the structure is underneath. I'm still working on fitting 3 point retractable seat belts to my vert, and I may have it solved if I can mount a loop to the outside headrests, like later model cars.
blue ss Oct 2nd, 07, 11:21 AM Eric I dont know about the original 69s , I bought repo 69s for my 67 they looked very good. I had to change them to lt. blue and bought covers from pui. It did turn out good.
3rail Oct 2nd, 07, 12:31 PM My originals are as hard as bricks so I guess that is not too much help. I would have to assume the support bracket is covered in foam. PUI does make replacement covers. If yours are split, I would take off the old covers, repair the faulty foam and apply the PUI's. I have seen this done with "sealer in a can", the stuff you use to seal cracks around the house. Spray it on, it will expand as it hardens and then just cut the excess down to match the headrest profile.
The seats are only fastened to the body with 4 small bolts. My opinion, I do not think I would attach a safety harness to the headrest which is only sticking in the seat a few inches.
69-x55 Oct 2nd, 07, 05:29 PM My interior guy just steamed the new ones and pulled them over the old covers. Looks great, took him about 15 minutes. He said you can't take off old covers with out destroying them.
maizedog Oct 2nd, 07, 06:26 PM What do you do with the trim bead that goes around the top of the headrest when you use the covers? Leave it or cut it off? I was thinking about the covers but I didn't know if the old bead would look good under the new cover.

Jonesy Oct 2nd, 07, 06:52 PM i have never seen a good looking pair of recovered headrests.
The repops are okay, but I didnt like them. I ended up re-dying my white originals and they look great.
I have 727 white interior and the repops color was off quite a bit.
blue ss Oct 3rd, 07, 05:58 AM My repops, I cut the bead and instaled new covers from pui they do look good. If you get the right color for your car you would probably be happy with them. Wish they repoped Lt. blue 67s tho. I had to install them my wife would not go on long drives without being able to put her head back for naps. It was cheaper to get head rests than a new wife.
Eric Kammerer Oct 3rd, 07, 06:54 AM Still looking for photos of a disassembled headrest, if anyone has them.
69-x55 Oct 3rd, 07, 11:00 AM The trim bead stayed on. But you can't tell, its a tight fit to put them on. He did it this way incase I didn't like it it could be taken off. Then he sprayed glue on bottom of head rest to attach.
Microgiant Oct 9th, 07, 06:47 PM I dont believe you can disamble the headrests.
Hammered Oct 10th, 07, 07:50 PM I have one you can experiment on for $22 shipped.
Eric Kammerer Oct 10th, 07, 08:36 PM Thanks John, but I think I have it figured out. My back seat retractables are in and functional, now to tweak the fronts.
