View Full Version : '69 long vs. short spoiler
Burnsamatic Oct 2nd, 07, 05:04 PM When, in '69, did GM switch to the longer style spoiler vs. putting on the leftover '68(shorter spoiler) on?
I saw a '69 Z-28 with a feb.'69 build date that had the shorter spoiler on it. The guy swore up and down that was the spoiler the car came with.
Hylton Oct 2nd, 07, 05:28 PM They switched in the January timeframe but it is not unusual to see 02D cars with the short spoiler. I have seen an original 02D car with a shorty. I guess they just grabbed whatever was next.
Burnsamatic Oct 2nd, 07, 05:59 PM I don't remember the week. It could've been 02D. ?
RamAirDave Oct 2nd, 07, 06:06 PM There are three original 02D cars (that I know of) owned my members of the site that have the short spoiler.
Fred Ficarra Oct 2nd, 07, 06:42 PM The day I pulled out of my dealership with my new Camaro, I drove a block to the nearest gas station. (the dealer wouldn't fill my tank) Parked at the same pumps was another nearly new 69 Camaro. It was only a couple days old. (June) It had the 68 spoiler. The owner looked at my car and said "I (he) really got ripped-off". I shrugged. I knew nothing about my new car. At least nothing of its' construction.
rockin rollin Oct 2nd, 07, 07:06 PM My 69 RS has a build date of nov.68 and it came withthe shorty spoiler. causes some guys to wonder if it is the wrong one NO
z10kl Oct 2nd, 07, 07:27 PM I have never noticed a Yenko with the short spoiler. I believe the first ones were built Dec 68. I never thought of this before. I know some feb cars had the short one.
Burnsamatic Oct 2nd, 07, 08:31 PM There was a Bentley dealer up in New York that had a Yenko for sale recently that had the short spoiler. It was Fathom Green with a black vinyl top and white stripes.

I remember that car - man was it nice!
JohnZ Oct 3rd, 07, 06:17 PM The short spoilers phased out sometime in mid- to late March.
69OlympicGoldSS Oct 3rd, 07, 08:00 PM Pardon my ignorance guys but I never noticed the difference. How much difference is there between the two?
m21man Oct 3rd, 07, 08:05 PM 1 or 2 inches i believe? not sure though.

Here they are on the same car. It should have the smaller spoiler but I just didn't like it.

69OlympicGoldSS Oct 4th, 07, 05:21 AM I see, said the blind man. Thanks for posting the replies and the photos.
Unreal Oct 4th, 07, 07:16 AM I never noticed this before looking closely at Dennis's pics, but look at the angle on the ends of the two spoilers. On the 69 spoiler, the angle matches the contour of the upper quarter (maybe 70-75*). On the early spoiler it looks to be closer to 60*.
Also, If you look at early Yenkos, the stripe tip on the spoiler that aligns with the quarter panel stripe looks kind of funny. On later Yenkos, with the long spoiler, the stripe flows better...still a difference in angle between the quarter stripe and the spoiler stripe, but at least they are on the same plane.

Couldn't be. The July 69 Super Stock test of the 01B Olympic Gold Yenko shows the wider one. The many track photos of February-built Z11s all show the wider '69 rear spoiler. My 02B Z/28 had the wide one but 02D ZL1 #3 has the '68.
There was a period of time when a Camaro could have been built with either.
JohnZ Oct 4th, 07, 07:04 PM My 02D Z/28 (built 2/27/69) has its original short spoiler.
:beers:
copo-427 Oct 5th, 07, 11:34 AM My old 05E Z28 (Shipped 04/06/69) has a short spoiler from the factory.
