View Full Version : Clocking Window Crank Handles

Every time I've installed window crank handles after reinstalling door panels, I always wonder how they should be clocked. Is there a correct position or just personal preference? If so, is it clocked in the up or down position? If it matters, mine is a 69, with standard interior. Thanks

Hmmm. I've always had mine pointing forward... Don't know if that's "right" or not.

I am installing mine tomorrow and have planned to point the knobs forward with the windows in the up position.

That's the way I've always done it...wonder what the guys on the assembly lines did?

Im not in y'all's league on car details, and I usually stay clear of these areas of TC but this one grabbed my attention cuz I've always wondered too.

I always put them where gravity pulls the handle to close the window, when it is closed. Haven't done one in years, but if I remember right this has them pointing opposite each other and doesn't bother me a bit:D, but it would probly bug you guys.

My 2 cents, now I'll go back to my engines and stuff and leave y'all alone

There is a specific degree ( I think 45* down and forward).

That's how Ive always installed them, with the windows in the down position. Cleaner, more detailed appearance if for nothing else.

On a 67 if you install the handle at 12:00 o’clock with the window fully down your leg won’t touch the knob. If you install it this way you will also have good legroom when the window is fully up with the knob forward and down. On a long trip this is important if you like maximum room to spread out.

The guy I used to work for owned a body shop for 30 years. He always told me to roll the window up and install them around 10:00 or 11:00 for the right door and at 1:00 or 2:00 on the driver's door. This way they are both facing forward with gravity pulling them down (which was mentioned) and they will not hit the side of your knee (which was mentioned). Not sure if that's "correct", but I think it looks good in my opinion. Brian

Just so they don't rub the leg....open or closed, has always been my way. Not the right way, just my way.

You can walk up to one that has the handle going with gravity for unrolling, and start shaking the window up and down with the flat palms of your hands.... it will usually roll down enough to get a wire inside and open the door. I remember doing that in High School when people would lock their keys in the car.

Agree, and keep it out of the leg, for me.

I wonder what an accidental surfer to this web site would think if he read this thread. OK, I confess. I keep mine straight down when rolled-up. Can't remember a time that I wasn't concerned about their orientation.

There was a Fisher Body spec for clocking of all the window cranks, but I've long forgotten it and don't have a set of their O.D. (Operation Description) Sheets that show it. Put them where they're convenient for you. :)
