View Full Version : Is it hard to get a VIN tag if you have the title??
ToocoolZ28 Oct 3rd, 07, 09:13 PM I inherited a car from my step-father when he died, its not a Camaro, pic below. After getting the car and checking it out I noticed the vin tag is missing. The con vin is easy to see and it matches the title that I got with the car. I need to title this car in TN, it came from Ohio. I'm almost afraid to go to the DMV because they usually need to see the car when it comes from another state. I hate to open a can of worms with this thing. My Step-father has had the car since around 1980 or so. The original tag is supposed to be on the drivers door but I think the door was replaced when the car was restored many years ago.
Has anyone had this happen?
oops, im not a paying member so I cant post a pic.
Its a 60 Thunderbird convertible, fully restored and a very nice car
Thanks.

rivieragransport Oct 4th, 07, 02:31 AM Ron...according to a book I have called American Car ID Numbers...the vin number is "Die stamped into top surface of front fender cross-brace to the right of hood lock plate". The plate on the door you are referring to is the data tag and wasnt intended to be used for titling purposes but for info on colors, original trans, rear end ratios etc. Missing the data tag is like missing a cowl tag on a Camaro so it will devalue the car...there are sources for those tags..just do an internet search. The good thing is that the vin number is stamped into the body and you dont have to rely on the door tag. Hope that helps... Ron

I would just not worry about the trim tag. its gone leave it gone. a fake trim tag in my opinion de-value's the car even more than No tag.It isnt needed for titleling.By the way beautiful car looks like gramp's did a great job on the car. If he did it himself maybe have a look around his garage for the trim tag

ldrisner Oct 4th, 07, 09:23 AM I'd call the DMV. You do not want to go any further with this car if is not legit, so why fear the State people.
Get it resolved up front and then enjoy it freely.

If he did it himself maybe have a look around his garage for the trim tag He did do almost all the work himself, I've had this car in my garage for 2 1/2 years since he died, I just havent done anything with it. Believe me, I made a special trip back up there just to look for the trim tag, it's not anywhere that I could find. The thing that has me worried is the VIN is on the trim tag. I'll call the DMV before I do anything else to the car, I'm just worried because of all the horrer stories I hear about. Thanks a lot guys.

Here is a pic of what the tag looks like, you can see the vin on the tag.

This is not your "official" VIN tag, it is a trim tag with a VIN on it. You do not need it to get the car transfered to your name.
Read post #3 from rivieragransport again, he told you where to look for the stamped VIN, that is what the DMV wants. Have you looked for it there?
You can also check here for verification of location:
http://www.backyardautomotive.com/vin_examples.html
And, that tag is available reproduction, but you shouldn't need it for registration if you have the stamped VIN.
sleepsinshed Oct 4th, 07, 11:54 AM That is a cool car!
68 Ragtop Oct 4th, 07, 12:16 PM A more precise location of the stamped VIN location from Thunderbird Restoration Guide, 1958-1966 By William Wonder is "VIN stamps 1960: The number is stamped on the passenger-side inner fender apron, just above the upper control arm"
It may be covered in layers of paint so look carefully.
Some VIN fender stamps also start and stop with an asterisk, so look for those.

Thats where it is, its in plain view on the fender apron. I should be OK then I guess.
thanks.
