: 69 Camaro 3857706 Battety cable clips
melav8r Oct 3rd, 07, 09:34 PM Hate to sound dumb, but I'm trying to figure out how to attach the battery cable clips, 1 for negative cable to alternator bracket, 2 for positive cable to subframe. Are you supposed to somehow squeeze the small sleeve after slipping it thru the hole? these are repro clips.
thanks.
CamarosRus Oct 3rd, 07, 09:55 PM Boy...........I'm all over this thread........I've never read about anyone knowing how these really were installed ORIGINALLY............probably a special tool, non of us,will have access too!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
camsdad Oct 3rd, 07, 10:29 PM I can tell you how I did it on my subframe. I used a tapered head screw like the one in this image below. a small washer between the clamp and spacer then the tightening nut, use small spacer slightly larger than the threaded screw and a nut on top of it to tighten the screw.
Insert the clamp into the frame, stick the screw from the bottom up so the taperd head will flair the clamp at the bottom side as the screw is tightened. Once the clamp is secure just loosen the nut and drop the screw back out. Worked like a charm for me.

Hope I explained it ok.
angelglo Oct 3rd, 07, 10:46 PM what i did was use a riveter. instead of putting a rivet in the riveter, i put a nail that will just fit through the hole in the subframe. i tightened the riveter which squeezed the clip tightly against the frame and worked out pretty good. the only problem is that there is a nail in the subframe. if i were to do it again, i would have found a way to teather the nail from the bottom so i could easily pull it out from inside of the frame
melav8r Oct 4th, 07, 09:55 AM I figured it required squeezing the sleeve after inserting through the subframe or alternator bracket. I like the idea of the tapered head to help open the sleeve up, but was thinking more along the lines of using a rivet gun.
Kurt, sounds like you came in with the screw from inside the subframe and was able to retrieve it.
Angelo, if thats the case maybe you could have used a magnet to catch the nail after squeezing the clamp.
thanks guys.

Yep!
It worked like a charm. Took all of about 3 minutes to do both clips in the frame.
CamarosRus Oct 4th, 07, 03:51 PM Can SOMEBODY Please show (or Email me) pics of these two clips locations..........and how difficult to install on a together 69 Camaro..........

Fred Ficarra Oct 4th, 07, 04:55 PM I still have my original clip for the positive cable to the starter motor. At least I think it's for that purpose. The batteries have been in the trunk for nearly 30 years. Just a second. I'll post a picture on my web site.
Here ya go,,,, Like I said, can't think of any other clips. I double checked. This is in front of the passenger side of the subframe crossmember. Note the control arm nut.

JohnZ Oct 4th, 07, 06:43 PM The plant used a pistol-type air hammer with a shouldered shank in it; the shoulder pressed the clip against the part, and the pin in the center expanded the tubular insert inside the frame when you pulled the trigger. You can do the same thing with a small-diameter drift punch and a hammer. :)
angelglo Oct 4th, 07, 07:54 PM i tried to catch with a magnet but it fell. i used the expanding wand with a magnet at the end. now, i just cant find it so it will have to stay there. oh well, out of sight, out of mind
camsdad Oct 4th, 07, 08:15 PM OK here are some pictures of the jig I made to install mine.
Hope this helps.:D:thumbsup::beers::hurray:

Fred Ficarra Oct 4th, 07, 11:23 PM Oh my gawd!!!! I even double checked and didn't see the forward clip. I'd seen it a thousand times and it was even in my minds eye. I just looked again. There it is!
I'm getting too old for this stuff. And I'm going racing with the car tomorrow. Maybe oldness is why I'm not into the 11's yet!

Here's a suggestion - buy at least two more than you think you'll need. The tubes don't always collapse the way you want them to and sometimes they just plain old fall apart. Too bad they are so high priced for cheaply made crap.
melav8r Oct 5th, 07, 12:46 PM Sweet, thanks a bunch guys!!
