View Full Version : 68 daytona 500 pace cars
68 rs/ss 396/350hp vert Oct 5th, 07, 07:21 AM Hi all, new to this sight but from what i have been seeing the knowledge it holds is invaluable!! Well I'm going to jump right to the point. What is know about the pace car(s) that paced the 1968 daytona 500 and how can I find out more info....I have seen the one that is housed in the international motorsport hall of fame in talladega, AL. and read the article on the year one restoration in super chevy mag, but there dosent seem to be much else available or I've not been looking in the right place. I would like the find out the build date of this car, the sequence VIN #. The reason I'm so curious is that I have a sister car to this one. Its optioned identical to the one in Alabama, color combo (interior and exterior), engine, trans, rear, plus all other options such as A/C ,tilt, PW, speed warning, tach, gauges, and I do have the protect-o-plate to authenticate it.
I know the history of the car back to 1973, but from there..nothing. I do know that my car was sold through Bill Gatton Chevy in BRISTOL TN and had heard that there were 4 cars built for the race and thought it could be plausable that they were sent out to other dealers near popular NASCAR tracks after speedweeks? Thanks for any and all help
click Oct 5th, 07, 07:38 AM welcome to Team Camaro lab... there was no 68 camaro pace car. It was either the 67 in 1967 or the 69 in 1969 that paced the Indy. If you use our 'search' feature and type in Pace Car you should find alot of reading about the cars. Also visit www.camaros.org and use their search feature as well. If you post your VIN and Cowl tag info. here, the numbers gurus in here can approximate your build date for you :)
68 rs/ss 396/350hp vert Oct 5th, 07, 07:52 AM Yes, I'm aware that there were no 1968 Indy pace cars, only 1967 and 1969 for that race........1968 Daytona 500 is the race that I'm referencing too.
Z10396 Oct 5th, 07, 08:20 AM I personally don't know anything about them but I have heard about first gens being used as NASCAR pacecars. As I said, I have heard of the them but know nothing about them. As with anything Camaro related, I am sure that the guys here will know something to help you out.

68 rs/ss 396/350hp vert Oct 5th, 07, 09:43 AM The daytona website shows a 68 camaro pace car with different style lettering in different positions from the one in the international motorsports hall of fame which leads me to believe that there were at least 2 pace cars for that event. My car has an 11D date code which would put it being built prior to the race. Hopefully some more of our members can chime in with tidbits.

ChevyThunder Oct 5th, 07, 03:51 PM Nothing on the 500 but here are the Camaro's that paced the 1968 and 1969 Daytona 24 Hour races . Mark , I know in the other thread link posted above you were looking for photos to collaborate any of those ebay photos. I think you can at least do so for the 69 24 hour pace car. FYI the #6 SUNOCO Lola behind the pace car was driven by Mark Donahue. 2nd on grid and won the race. He had a good year with chevy power :)

Unreal Oct 5th, 07, 07:22 PM There are some NASCAR 69 pace cars floating around. I talked with a guy from Canada who purchased a car out of Cleveland, TN, about 20 miles from me.....how come I didn't know about it!!! He thought it might have come from Adcox Chevrolet, a dealer in Chattanooga. Adcox was also in Yenko's dealer network, but i don't think he never sold one.

I have a big winter planned also. I have this nasty habit of chasing Large Mouth bass, cuts into my Camaro time!! I assure you, yours is no uglier than mine....on four jackstands the subframe is the only thing left to remove. That would be gone if I had somewhere to put it.
Keep us posted on your progress.
