: Holy Smokes!
Rich-Allen Oct 12th, 07, 07:48 AM You can imagine my surprise when I started to drop the transmission and found this abortion.
Yes folks, that's premium mechanical duct sheet metal, pop riveted, and glued with some sort of *** jelly. The bottom of the patch was treated with premium asphalt roof coating.

Notice the tearing of the sheet metal in the last photo, I don't even want to know how it got like that.
This was all hiding under that fresh paint, new interior, ect ect.

Rich-Allen Oct 12th, 07, 07:57 AM Becuase this patch was on the side of the tunnel I thought it was for an automatic.
DDOLES Oct 12th, 07, 08:00 AM It looks like it is time to get out the good ole' mig welder and do some patch work. I think i feel the same way you do. I would not trust the kind of repair you have there! it should be a pretty simple and straight forward repair though. good luck !
Everett#2390 Oct 12th, 07, 08:50 AM PO must of had a Hurst Vertical Gate shifter.
68vert Oct 12th, 07, 09:23 AM I love seeing "bubba" in action!!! My PO used Pabst Blue Ribbon beer cases, bondo, and undercoating to hide the rust in my previous car's floor. At least "your bubba" used metal!!! LOVE the "*** jelly" comment!!!! Good stuff... Brian
Codi Oct 12th, 07, 09:24 AM I see you got the tranny out. What's the complaint? Just kidding. Found some similiar stuff on my Camaro when I tore it down. How the bondo got under the windshield I'll never know.
Myfirst 69SS Oct 12th, 07, 10:30 AM Mine loocked worse than that.

Gambitt Oct 12th, 07, 12:23 PM Mine was similar, but whoever modified it just made a cut on each side and bent the metal down.
Microgiant Oct 12th, 07, 01:34 PM My resto looks like that though not quite as large of a opening. I was thinking of getting complete new floorbards because I also have a few pinholes in the driver side floor pan. This was a commom mod apparently.
rkh3 Oct 12th, 07, 05:25 PM Certainly makes you wonder what else "bubba" did to the car!
67FamilyFun Oct 12th, 07, 05:56 PM I love seeing "bubba" in action!!! My PO used Pabst Blue Ribbon beer cases, bondo, and undercoating to hide the rust in my previous car's floor. At least "your bubba" used metal!!! LOVE the "*** jelly" comment!!!! Good stuff... Brian
ROTFLMAO!!!:hurray::beers: Pabst Blue Ribbon cases...least he could have done was used Coors since it's kinda "silvery" colored...I hope you're exaggerating!

BA. Oct 12th, 07, 08:22 PM loved the ***-jelly comment Rich-Allen. :) funny stuff.
There was another recent thread about someone's tunnel cut like that. I'm amazed how many have been butchered this way!
chops Oct 12th, 07, 08:25 PM That 'tearing' is the artful mastery of tin snips.
At least they didn't use duct tape.
spideynut Oct 12th, 07, 08:32 PM Mine was the same size but covered with cardbord box. I believe it was Mobil HD30.
deerhunter Oct 12th, 07, 08:42 PM But it doesn't look like it leaked and anyone seeing it just got run over or is up to no good.
jus4funn68 Oct 12th, 07, 11:27 PM I had a large hole cut behind the original opening on my 68 and I was concerned about making the bottom look right since it has a flange around the hole. Was I suprised and ecstatic when I pulled the carpet up and saw that the PO threw the original piece he had cut out under there for safe keeping. Boy did that make the repair a breeze!! Kevin
clwilcox33 Oct 13th, 07, 05:01 AM Did you mean aberation? :beers:
Rich-Allen Oct 13th, 07, 06:37 AM Those pictures are from two months ago, I lost the cord to upload pics from my camera until yesterday. wagonman, my car is 67, and I really appreciate the help. I fixed the abortion the weekend after I found it.
Ricks sells a partial tunnel for this very fix. Using a square and plasma, I shaped the square so it could easily be welded. It took about 6 hours to fix it completely.
I used humor when posting the pics and typing the thread only because the initial shock was over and the fix was completed.
Here are a couple more pics, they drilled and grinded slots in the body to hold the exhaust brackets. I know for a fact the car lot did the exhaust. I used mig to tack around the patch then I used the tig to finish it up.
I will; post some pics of the final prooducts tomorrow.

Rich-Allen Oct 13th, 07, 06:42 AM With so many of us having the same fix it tells me this was probably where the stock auto shifter entered the tunnel.
My car came stock with a powerglide
