I’m going to powder coat the air cleaner housing. However, the rubber gasket in the lid will not survive the curing process.

Is there a trick to removing rubber gaskets without damaging them? If not, is there a company that makes custom rubber gaskets (i.e., I send them a description or the part and they create one that will work)?

Do I even need the gasket? The air would be still be passing through the filter before entering the carb, so maybe the gasket is not critical?

Thanks in advance.

What gasket are you refering to? The gasket seal between the carb and air cleaner? The seal around a cowl induction cleaner?
All of these should be easy to remove.
Need more info, or maybe I'm just confused...

I just removed the lid gasket on my air cleaner and it can be done with minimal damage by getting under it in one spot and then scrapping it off from under it. I used a screw drive that was about the width of the channel for the gasket. I sharpened and old screw driver to help scrape it off. You will be glueing the gasket back in with some weather strip adhesive so it the is a little bit of tearing on the gasket just put that side on the inside and no one will ever see it again.
Good Luck

Joe G,

It's the gasket in the lid.

Splam@aol.com,

Thanks for advice!! I'm glad to know someone else has attempted and succeeded in doing this. Do you think a heat gun would be useful to loosen it before using the screwdriver?
