View Full Version : Opinions Needed on a Broken Bolt
artie Oct 15th, 07, 08:27 PM Help needed....
I broke the right side fuel pump mounting plate bolt. I have spent the last 2 weeks on this project. I have broken many drill bits and easy outs trying to clear the hole. I now have a good size easy out that broke and is stuck in the hole. I am assuming it is hardened steel and will be a bitch to get out.
Is that bolt really needed? Will the other 3 hold everything in place?
At this point, I think my only options are as follows:
1. pull the engine to clear the hole and use a heli-coil.
or
2. use just 1 mounting plate bolt and the 2 fuel pump bolts to hold everything in place.
JimM Oct 15th, 07, 08:53 PM Option 2 will still be mechanically sound. There's no stress on that plate, it's all on the fuel pump, which still has 2 good bolt holes.
Goop it up good so it don't leak and keep your fingers crossed.

Thanks Jim...Will do.

pdq67 Oct 16th, 07, 05:04 PM Ditto Tim here!!

kustomwerker Oct 16th, 07, 06:02 PM sounds like artie already drilled on it to the point where welding isnt an option any more...the easy outs are extremely brittle, and prolly will break up with a punch and hammer...(btdt)alternate between pointed and flat faced to really bust it up...after you get it broken up, a straight or 45 deg pick usually gets the broken chunks out fairly well...then i`d just drill and helicoil it instead of trying another easy-out, seeing as how its broken 1 on you already...

Mike, Beware using the word "prolly" but I know what you mean. I believe we have some english professor from S.C. that pops in to read and it seems to preturb him.
I got a pm from someone out of the blue, 7am in the morning, stating that I should use a proofreader to scan my messages here before I post. Thats 7 am on a Sunday! I responded that I was a west texas hick and did not know better..
Ok, back to the subject of the broken bolt, he must have broken the 1/4" cap screw and its no big deal, as Jim said.
67CamaroRS/SS Oct 16th, 07, 06:54 PM A little off the point, but who the hell cares how we spell. It's a website for car guys, not professors.
Badbird Oct 16th, 07, 07:30 PM Charlie, I think Donald was prolly joking around with Michael or maybe not!!.....I just don't know!!

No , not joking , I still have his pm and for the life of me don't know what set him off. We all know what each other is saying , even with misspellled worksd , etc , even WHEN THEY TYPE LLIKE THIS.
I will just keep the note to remind me not to use that word or type so early Sunday mornings.
77wolf10.85 Oct 16th, 07, 07:51 PM Blow him off Don. I know what you're saying. And if I don't I'll either blow it off or say "Don, wtf zat mean?". Relax, you're among friends. We all screw up.

Old Man Oct 17th, 07, 11:27 AM There are several different types of "easy" outs available. Have you tried the short fat ones with the socket drive(7/16's I think)? Most that I've seen are of the needle type but the shorter/fat ones aren't as brittle as the needle type and seem to dig in better, I know Snap-on sells them. Have you tried turning it out with a small chisel?
Joe Harrison Oct 17th, 07, 12:53 PM i wood prolly tri two brake up da eazi out first then tri the weldding trik postered abuv. :D :waving: professor!!

SY1 Oct 17th, 07, 06:02 PM You guys can laugh if you want, I know I'm old school. But I picked up an old Speak And Spell toy at an antique festival that I keep next to the computer to keep me out of this sort of thing. Soe far is werking out grate fore me. Sometimes the string jams though.
Seriously I agree with Charlie on this one.
Badbird Oct 17th, 07, 06:54 PM I wish I knew who "Professor Underpants" was??
JimM Oct 17th, 07, 08:05 PM you guys are funny.... as for the spelling, I try, but I dn't speel well, and I type worse...lol.
As for drilling a broken easy out out of a fuel pump boss bolt with the engine in the chassix... HAHAHAHa!! yA, THAT'S HAPPENING IN THIS LIFETIME!!
It'll either leak or it won't leak. There's not a lot of oil in there, maybe he'll get lucky. Hopefully he uses something like permatex #2, not silicone.
If it leaks more than he can stand, the motor's gotta come out.

Gabby ? Hayes? The old western side kick from the older Roy Rogers shows? Sure sounds like sumpun he would say.
bdzee Oct 18th, 07, 01:25 PM I did not read all of the responses because I think the answer is simple: if you are not concerned about "Perfection" then one bolt with heavy permatex non hardening gasket sealer will work fine. If some oozes out after snugging it up then wipe it off and you will not have a problem with it. Some day if you pull the motor then you can mess with it if you choose.

It must be a few years since you've seen "Blazing Saddles" (1974) Don :D
Gabby Johnson (Jack Starrett) was one of the characters (and they really were ;) ) from that film that speaks in 'Authentic Frontier Gibberish' - or, to quote Olsen Johnson "Not only was it authentic frontier gibberish, but it expressed a courage that is little seen in this day and age."
His character was styled after Gabby Hayes accourding to Brooks.
Most don't realize this was the highest grossing western film until Dances with Wolves came along in the mid 90's :D
