I have a 69 camaro with a th400 and im switching over to a b-w 10 thats from 79. as far as i can tell its got a 3.42 first gear. other that the normal stuff i have to buy, do i have to change the drive shaft or crossmember, and will the shifter line up with the console?

I had one in my '69 -- converted from TH350. Here's what I think I remember:
-- Check which ST10 you have, but most had the TH400-style (32-splie) output, so the TH400 yoke will work fine. If it's really a '79 trans, it'll be 32-spline
-- I can't remember if the TH400 and TH350 driveshafts are the same length, but my TH350 shaft worked fine after I changed the yoke.
-- I used my original TH350 crossmember. You may be able to make the TH400 x-member work or just pick up someones used TH350/manual Xmember
-- To get the shifter to fit the opening, talk to Crash. Hurst, etc. does not make a "bolt-in" shifter kit, but Crash has pieced together some parts. I ended up using a Muncie kit and made my own shifter mount. Worked fine in my console ( a little tight in reverse though)

Crash is "Crashent" here on Camaros.net. You can search for posts under his name and see some of his comments regarding the ST10 stuff. Here's a user link:

For reference, I used the following parts to make everything work:
-- Hurst Comp Plus shifter assembly (3914340)
-- Hurst 5384106 shifter arm (this is actually for 67/68 camaros. I believe the 5387436 shifter arm will work as well)
-- Hurst Comp Plus shifter install kit for '69 Camaro with Muncie (3737437)

I ended up tweaking the shift rods a bit and drilled a new hole for the reverse rod in the shift lever on the trans (this is what made reverse pretty tight, but it also gave reverse a "long travel" shift, which made it harder to accidentally grab R). I've since moved to a TKO600 and enjoy the extra gear (but miss the deep 3.42 1st -- I need to swap out my rear). Also, since my care was originally a TH350, I just cut the shifter hole where it needed to be -- not sure if my setup would have fit the "stock" shifter hole...
