View Full Version : Racing stripes on first generation camaros
Bud8493 Oct 16th, 07, 07:03 PM Hello all!! I am new here and was refered by a friend. I am a huge camaro guy but my problem is I currently just got rid of my 1984 Z28 and I am currently looking to get a 1969 camaro z28. I have two questions for everyone. One I was looking through the CRG information and was wondering if any camaros in 1969 besides the Z28 where available with the racing stripes up the hood and the deck lid? I see a lot of SS and RS for sale with these stripes and wanted to gain some knowledge if they are suppose to be there or not? My second question is could anyone recommend the best way for me to find a descent 69 Z28? Thanks for everyones help. Bud
Eric Kammerer Oct 16th, 07, 08:05 PM The only other cars to get the hood and deck stripes were the Z10 and Z11. The hood and deck stripes were not a stand alone RPO, so you couldn't get them on anything other than Z28, Z10, or Z11.
Decent 69 Z? A real one? What's your budget? Prices are stabilizing a little, but basket case 69 Z's in need of total resto, including major sheetmetal replacement, can be $15K and up, depending on how complete they are.
camaromaniac Oct 16th, 07, 08:25 PM And completly finished, numbers matching drivetrane Z/28's go for $50k++++. So you have to ask yourself, do you feel lucky and what is your motivation for wanting a Z/28? There are a number of other Camaro models that make for very fun (and exhilarating) rides that you can acquire for a lot less money. Give us more information about your passion and budget and we'll let you know. Charlie 69 RS

You may want to read this thread http://www.camaros.net/forums/showthread.php?t=118721 to get a feel for what real 69 Z owners think about the way the car performs in stock trim. You may come to decide that budget and common sense steer you into a Z "tribute" (or clone, or recreation, whatever you want to call them).
Bud8493 Oct 17th, 07, 06:00 PM Charlie,
Thanks for the info! I realize the price of the 69 z28's but I have to be honest my attraction to them is the look of the stripes on the hood and deck lid. What I really want is a car that is a real deal whether a SS, RS or z28. My big question was any of the other models available with striping on the hoods and deck lid from the factory? Thanks for your help! Bud
Bud8493 Oct 17th, 07, 06:05 PM Eric,
Thanks for the info. My next question is what is a Z10 and Z11 car and is this number found on the cowl tag? My budget for a 1969 camaro is from 35,000-40,000. I would be more then happy to do some work to the car so it does not have to be show condition.
Mark C Oct 17th, 07, 06:29 PM Z11 is a 69 Indy Pacecar convertible, made from Late February of 59 to Early May. Nor wood built cars (with an N in the VIN and NOR on the cowl tag) will have Z11 on it, Cars built in the LA plant (L in the VIN and VN on the cowl tag) will not have Z11 on them, but will have an exterior paint code of 50 A and an interior code of 720 (as will the Norwood built cars). There was 3675 of these models made back in 69. The Z10's are commonly refered to as Pace Car coupes, (but they didn't have anything to do with the Indy 500) and were only built at the Norwood plant, between Mid April and Mid May of 1969. The Z10 code will also be present on all of the Z10's. They are all white painted coupes with orange stripes they can have Vinyl tops and just about any colored interior (none have been found with the orange houndstooth interiors the PAcecars come with) there was somewhere between 200 and 800 of these out there back in 69. Most are in the Arizona, Texas New Mexico area. Both models are RS/SS's. 35 to 40K will get you into either of these, but they will be drivers, not 100 point show cars. These models are just below the Z28's value wise. Big blocks in either model of course will increase the value and the price.

Stewie Oct 18th, 07, 08:02 AM Bud: I know you are a newbie so you need to do your homework. It sound like you are looking for a certain look. Many owners who like the Z stripes are having them applied to their cars. They only came stock on cetain cars but a lot of people including me like the look. I have owned 3 69 Zs in the current market they are way over priced as far as I am concerned. I sold one about 4 years ago for 40,000. If I were looking for a nice car I would look for either a 68 or 69. I would look for a standard car with a 350 and a 4 speed. You could have it painted with the stripes and you will have a very nice car to have fun with and have the look you want. Also it will be a lot more reasonable to purchase.
Below is a picture of my 68 that I bought 4 years ago for 11,000 Can. I have put about 5000 into the car but that was for suspension and brakes. The exterior was sanded and buffed only. This should give you and idea of what a standard car can look like with Z Stripes.

Old baldguy Oct 18th, 07, 10:37 AM Welcome Bud ,Lots of very knowledgeable folkes here,as you can read ,I get impressed all the time by the knowledge here,by what I read ,hope you get what you are looking for ,Happy Motoring
camaromaniac Oct 18th, 07, 11:49 AM Bud, the one thing we ask of you is that you resist the temptation of buying a car sight, unseen. Most of us can tell you from personal or from the experience of a friend, that the sight unseen cars showing up at your driveway 99.9% of the time will not meet your expectations. And, on top of that, as you can see just in this thread, there are a number of fake trim tags out there, so at best, you windup paying too much for a base car when you thought it was something else. If you can't go the distance to see a car, there is almost certainly someone here on tc that would be happy to do it for you. We want you to make the best informed decision because we have seen too many bad deals already. Charlie 69 RS
ps: I too love the Z/28 stripes and will be putting them on my car once I get around to repainting it.

Bud8493 Oct 23rd, 07, 05:46 PM Mark,
I think I looked at this car it is at a dealership in upstate ny according to the dealer the car is an original Z but the motor and tranny are not original. But I do get your point. Is there any obvious things to point out a fake cowl tag ex. rivets, wording or something?
Thanks for your help.
Bud
Bud8493 Oct 23rd, 07, 05:49 PM Nice car. With the exact color combination I like. Thanks for the info.
