View Full Version : Top of Dash Paint - textured not good

I primed my dash top today and used an old fender to test the 2 rustoleums. The textured looked like it would be a dust collector and had more gloss then the 7777. Were the orignal dashs painted with the suede look to them or just a 0 gloss paint. All the past posts have conflicting information. Any pics of an orignal black dash would be great!
Thanks as always,
Don

The top of the dash was painted with a 'suede' additive mixed in the paint. It causes the paint to wrinkle slightly for a non-glare surface.

Thanks William, I was afraid that was the case. It looks like the Rustoleum texture is going to be a pain to keep clean.75 degrees plus today in NJ so its a good day to knock this off.

I felt the same as you when I started to paint my dash...I'm in Tennessee and its "cookin" down here in the summer. Also I've had the car a long time and it always was hard to keep the dash top clean. So on my restore I painted the top the same semi-closs as the rest of the dash...and its much easier to clean and no glare problems

Try using the textured paint then paint over it with your interior color. This will make it a little smoother without loosing the texture. I used the texture, then the same paint I used on the rest of the interior. After the interior paint I used a flat clear from a hobby store. It came out with the suede look but smooth enough to keep clean. Hope this will help.

I am in the process on painting my entire dash and dash panel. I see people making reference to 7777 and semi-gloss as if it is the same. 7777 is actually considered semi-flat. I can see were it would be used for the the flat portion of the dash panel containing the vin number but not the entire dash interior. Is Krylon semi-gloss correct for the "interior" portion of the dash?

Thanks

You are correct. The 7777 was for the top of the dash only. Not enough gloss for the front. There are some posts on what paint looks good. I do think its a Krylon which would be a 60% gloss.

After reading many posts, I painted the front of my dash with Rustoleum 7777. It was almost a perfect match to the original % gloss.

Somebody clarify for the newbie.... 777 for the top of the dash on a 67. What about the front of the dash (glove box, etc.) and what about the tops of the doors?

Is this a rattle can spray? Can it be obtained as a liquid and applied with an air brush (for control)?

For what it's worth, the 69 color codes and glosses, and what surfaces are which gloss are here:

68 should be the same gloss levels, but different colors (some of them). I'm fairly certain that the 67s had athe same low gloss top (not "0" gloss with texture, like the 68-69 which were subject to "new" anti-glare standards).

I have shot the factory coded low-gloss 9266 black side by side with Rustoleum 7777; there is no significant difference.

Franken - Rustoleum 7777 is available as a rattle can or a pint/quart at nearly any hardware or home improvement store. Lots of folks use it because it's durable, cheap, and easy to find. If I had known it would look the same as the 9266 I ordered in single stage poly, it's what I would have used.

What about the front of a 69 dash? The area around the glove compartment and such? Semi-gloss?

Nope. Low gloss. On the Ditzler chart I linked, that would be the "lower instrument panel (exposed areas), instrument panel compartment door, hinge, and flange" etc.

Just got finished painting everything. I did the dash top with rustoleum texture, Krylon clear satin and a top coat of 7777. It looks really nice but I still think it is going to be tough to clean. I also did the rest of the dash and shot the steering column as well with 7777. Looks good and matches up well to original. I have been very busy as that I also put a coat of POR on the interior floor boards.

Does the 7777 scratch easy on the dash? Do I need to put clear on top of it?

The dash is pretty protected on a 1st Gen.
Spray cans are just decent for scratches. Not Great, Not bad!!!!
Clear Coat won't make it look right.

I can't recall the black I used but I know I cleared it with Dullcoat from my local hobby shop by the model car paints. The more coats the duller it gets with out any real change of the color. Just the top the front is supposed to be woodgrain:D
