View Full Version : True Super Sport 1969 Camaro How do you tell? 6781camaro Oct 20th, 07, 08:20 PM Hi guys! I am thinking about buying a 1969 Camaro SS X55 Coupe. I need some advice on how to tell if it is real or not. Please advise. Thank you in advance. Dougs72Nova Oct 20th, 07, 08:21 PM Might want to post this in tag team. You will get a better response there. Eric Kammerer Oct 20th, 07, 08:33 PM Well, if the tag hasn't been off the car, it's an SS. X55 can only be an SS350 without Style Trim. Best thing to do is post a trim tag pic and the VIN here. If the tag is real, and hasn't been off, it's an SS350. If the tag has been off, but is real and lines up with the VIN, it probably is an SS350. If the tag is fake, well... Of course, an L-48 350 with an original assembly stamp and a matching partial VIN would be good too. 6781camaro Oct 21st, 07, 05:13 AM Is it better to buy an X11 SS instead or an X22 even? Now I am confused. It looks original and unmolested in many ways. It has disc brakes, gauges, 10 bolt posi, no style trim, tilt wheel, power windows, cowl hood that is a GM, and a black grille. What are the other tell-tale signs? Thanks... ragtop69 Oct 21st, 07, 06:03 AM it should have a 12 bolt rear end.if not it has been change. 69 ss came with 12bolt rear end,350 or bigger engine 396,427. 78MBA Oct 21st, 07, 07:08 AM Visit www.camaros.org/diffs69.shtml look at the category labeled "SS l48" and follow it down. It will give you block casting #'s and all options to help identify the car. This link is for Camaro Research Group where you can find the most detailed info about options. Check out the rest of the site too, it has alot of info that will help in your search. Good luck! sstasy Oct 21st, 07, 07:34 AM I'm no expert but I purchased my X11 SS from the original owner and it was unmolested so in compaison to other models of 69's I found it must have a 12 bolt rear and dual fuel lines ( return ) for certain. click Oct 21st, 07, 08:24 AM some SS's did have 10bolts. Its in the reading material at CRG. Also, in early 69 a dual fuel line also could be a non SS LM1, so the dates of a build are important in that regard. Jonesy Oct 21st, 07, 09:09 AM The only SS's with 10 bolt had Powerglide trans. Not sure how many or the build weeks it happened. Not very common. johns Oct 22nd, 07, 07:21 PM Have you pulled the rear seat? Should be X 5 on the top right. Eric Kammerer Oct 22nd, 07, 07:39 PM I don't know if CRG has any info on when/if the factory stopped chalking the codes on the sheetmetal behind the seat, but my gut feel is that they would not have continued that for very long once the tags started being stamped with the codes. The car Todd is looking at is an August 69 build. Unreal Oct 23rd, 07, 08:59 AM X55, if real, is only SS350. I'm betting the rear is not original, but check to see if the dates line up with the car. Also check for clues of PG. Other than 2 speed gear indicator, I don't know what to look for, but others here can probably help. The car Todd is looking at is an August 69 build. FWIW, my old car was an 06-A / X11 D80 car and it had the X chalk mark on the bulkhead....not sure when they ended it.... Dan |
