: Best traction device needed
speedfreek Oct 22nd, 07, 02:14 PM Well maybe not the best or most expensive, just looking for something nice to help with suspension.
Here is the story: About 5 years ago I bought some South Side Machine lift bars for my multi-leaf car. Well it seems that I ordered ones for mono-leaf! I put them on anyway and used them for many miles wondering if they were performing right. Well I took them off and want something better to put back on. I was going to leave them off but my car squats so hard when I mash it I am scared that it's gonna rub. So what is a good traction device that you recommend? thanks

If your good with a welder and can fabricate, you could build your own.

Yep, found it right here: http://www.hotrodsandhemis.com/Traction.html
I would probably rather buy them, just feeling kinda lazy! lol
Any more suggestions?

yikes $300:eek:, might have to get me a good nights sleep and try this.
How long did it take you to build the first one Doug?
DOUG G Oct 24th, 07, 02:32 PM A few days at a few hours at a clip... built at work :D

Install an air shock in the right rear and preload with about 50psi. (You'll need to do a few launches to see what pressure works best.)
The axle's torque reaction lifts this wheel upward and reduces it's traction. The air shock will keep weight on it.
Not only the cheapest in my case, but the best improvement to traction I've made.

Well Doug, I woke up this morn with a case of the lazy A$$ so I just ordered me a set of Caltracs. $369.............whew that was hard work! lol:D
DOUG G Oct 25th, 07, 02:00 PM LOL... Now just think how long it took to make that $369... Thats a week for some.
mnjettr Oct 29th, 07, 07:24 AM I like the idea of the caltracs, but have a question. in the diagram it tells how to figure the length of the bellcrank using a multi leaf spring. I have mono leafs. what length should I make the bracket????
DOUG G Oct 29th, 07, 06:21 PM Measure back to where it will clear the spring pocket... without looking I think it was 4" from the center of the spring bolt.
gcr1969 Oct 29th, 07, 08:39 PM Caltrac's work well. Do yourself a favor and don't use them with a multi-leaf spring. I had the biggest problem when using a muli-leaf spring and a set of 50/50 comp shocks. The multi-leaf spring would force the body to seperate too rapidly, The car would have good traction for the first 40 to 50 feet and then spin the tire. After talking to Calvert Racing they said it was cause by too strong of a rear spring rate, I replaced the rear springs to a split mono spring and installed a set of rancho rs9000's shocks. You can see for the two pictures I added the difference between the amount of body seperation the first picture was with a 383 and the second was with a 406 making 75 to 100 hp more. ...Mark

OK, thanks
DOUG G Oct 30th, 07, 04:11 PM Mark, car looks great and thats what I'm shootin' for.
I just installed the Rancho's and have no idea where to start... can ya give me a clue ? Driver/passenger side settings ?
gcr1969 Oct 30th, 07, 08:48 PM I always set mine with the drivers weight in the drivers seat, with 1/2 turn of preload on each side. As far as shock setting start at the middle postion and make it stiffer from there, see what your setup likes. My car liked having the shock stiff. ...Mark
