How much axle sideplay would be considered normal?

I have a fresh big car 67' 12 bolt with Moser axles. Not on the street yet.
One axle has just the slightest amount of play when pulling the tire back and forth, the other makes a "clunk" and seems a little excessive. I now realize that the carrier shim setup can bring this condition on.
I do have rear disks, and my concern is that with the rotor moving back and forth, the pads on that side will wear quickly, and cause one wheel to drag in the turns.

Should I be concerned? And are axle retainers of different thicknesses available, or is this even how you'd correct it?

Something less than 1/8 inch because this is the thickness of the C-clip.
