View Full Version : Advice on rear rehab
robsryd Oct 26th, 07, 06:12 AM Hey guys and gals. I just bought a '98 disc brake rear for my '87 Z and am looking for advice as to what I schould do before I slap it in. I am aware I will at the least fabricate something for the e- brake cables. Also It was advertised as a "locking" rear, and there is an electrical plug on the top of the housing that I suspect is the locking solenoid connection, can anybody help confim this? And if so, which wire is pos/neg and do I wire a full 12 volts and switch to it? If I replace the front seal, will I have to pop the cover? These are a few questions I have, any help will will be appreciated.

72Tugboat Oct 26th, 07, 10:35 PM Will the E-brake cables from the '98 work by any chance? I'm pretty sure the plug is from a speed sensor.
If you're going from drum to disc rear brakes you need a different master cylinder and proportioning valve.
Good Luck!
chicane67 Oct 26th, 07, 11:37 PM Yes the cables will work... they will even snap into the underbody anchor clips.
As for the 'locking' differential, you will only know for sure by opening up the cover. I highly doubt that it has a locking differential in it. It would be a complete waste of money and most assuredly will help with the distruction of other internal weak components. And if it does... it will either be a Detroit Locker or a Lock-Right.
The electral connection is, as 72Tugboat states, the connection for the exciter of the ABS braking and Traction Control systems (either a three or four channel system).
You dont need to pull the cover to do a pinion seal... but if you have never done one, I would recommend you take it to someone that has. A simple mistake on the reassembly in concern to the pinion bearing pre-load... will cost you hundreds later.
robsryd Oct 27th, 07, 05:50 AM Thanks for the info, I'll put it to good use. As for pdq67, brother, what were you thinking?
BonzoHansen Oct 27th, 07, 07:26 AM 4th gen rear is wider, no? Might cause wheel fitment issues.
robsryd Oct 27th, 07, 10:28 AM About 3.5" wider, but I will let you know once I measure it myself. I will be buying new wheels in the future and will compensate with offset. What I did want to know is how to tell if it is a locker once I remove the cover, what should I look for?
pdq67 Oct 27th, 07, 01:49 PM I mean, HECK, it DID say, "Rehabbing a REAREND"!!
He, he!!
So you gotta teach her to do better, imho!

robsryd Oct 27th, 07, 04:35 PM If that were truly the case, I'd switch to a larger rear with less issues! Big girls need love too!
pdq67 Oct 28th, 07, 04:43 AM Big girl rearends!!

Locker? It should have a limted slip unit. I can't expain, I'd need to show you pics.
You will need different offset F&R wheels and you might not like the looks of that.
