View Full Version : Best Fuel Tank Repro?
IDS_Bill Oct 29th, 07, 10:51 AM Hey you guys,
I am getting ready to order the fuel tank assy and sending unit. Are there any opinions out there on the best place to get a repro or OEM unit? Also - the sending units come in repro and delco. I think I remember reading that the repro ones don't work as well but I could be wrong.
Any info would help.

jay'srs/ss Oct 29th, 07, 11:14 AM I can't vouch for the sending unit, since I haven't replaced mine cause it still works. But I got a Stainless Repro tank from Classic Industries that's real nice. :beers:
rsbecool Oct 29th, 07, 04:44 PM I placed a Stainless Repro tank from Classic in mine also and am very happy with it. The stainless looks great. Used the same sending unit.
Unreal Oct 29th, 07, 04:57 PM I bought a repop sending unit for my L72, and have a problem with reading the correct fuel level. I don't know for sure it's the sending unit, but bought a GM one to put on.
Gambitt Oct 29th, 07, 05:51 PM I have tried a few repo sending units in some of my other projects...they are a waste of money. The get rusty and cruddy in no time. The delco units are superior, so don't waste money in this area on a repo.
RamAirDave Oct 29th, 07, 07:16 PM The Canadian-made Spectre tank is very nice. The OER unit, I really don't care for at all (looks painted/powdercoated metallic silver).
The GM tanks are hit-and-miss, as they are shipped without a box. Some times you will get a decent one, but more often they are scratched/dented.
egore Mar 8th, 09, 09:15 AM Has anybody had any luck with repro. sending units or should I just bite the bullet and buy delco (repro 50$, delco 222$),cause If I already have the tank out to replace why put old unit back in even if it works (could go bad soon). And this spectre tank (everybody talks about) from canada, where can I get one, how much and does classic Ind. stock them. thanks for any info.

Check with our sponsor SS396.com as well. The tank is very easy to drop. If the sender is not bad I would not change it.

The Spectre Tank is handled by a lot of the vendors, it is a VERY Nice piece looks the same as GM IMO. I have used a lot of them.

Pretty sure this is a Spectre Tank by the S Prefix on the part number, Phone and ask them. Stupid thing is they are made in Canada, and I cannot buy this tank in Canada as cheap as the US vendors sell them for, even with shipping etc
As Far as the sending unit, you could just clean it and put a new O-Ring and Sock on it and Reuse it if it works. The repo,s are a hit and miss and are also known for not registering correctly. If you do use a repo, plug it in and test it first by having someone watch the guage, manually move the float up and down and make sure it works. I have used the repo,s and sometime the ground wire is too short also. Just had that happen in a 1970. I have also had to "Tweak"? the line before on the repo,s as well.
I personaly would use the GM, it is not worth the time and hassle to drop the tank again if it Screws up.
Stainless dog Mar 8th, 09, 04:05 PM I got the stainless tank from classic.Taiwan Tommy did a real good job on this one.NICE.
FBODY Mar 8th, 09, 04:57 PM On my 1st Gen, I purchase two bad repro sending units (giving bad readings) that I finally change for a Spectra Premium Sending Unit P/N FG104C (3/8 Single Line) that I purchased from NAPA.
As for the fuel tank, I purchased a repro from Classic Industries, the only issue is that it doesn't hold 18 gallons, it only holds a bit more than 15 gallons.
