View Full Version : help 69 z28 block
z28lover6968 Oct 31st, 07, 11:52 AM i am looking for a 1969 z28 350 engine block and heads.
i am going to try! to build an all numbers matching z28.
does anyone know what the engine block numbers should be and the head numbers?
drdave69 Oct 31st, 07, 11:56 AM First, welcome.
The 1969 Z28 did not use a 350, it had the 302. And, if you do not have the original engine it will never be numbers matching. You can use almost any small block core in this case.
z28lover6968 Oct 31st, 07, 11:58 AM i read in a camaro book that in 69 they had a 350. well, if i decide to go ahead with a 350 block from that year, what code should i look for. sorry, im new at this.
Unreal Oct 31st, 07, 05:19 PM 350 was available in two forms. 350/300hp was an SS50. 350/255 was a 2 barrel carb version and was not an SS.
If you are looking for a 69 Z/28 motor as the base for your Z/28 clone, look for the DZ engine code. They're pricey and a popular engine to restamp to sucker an unsuspecting buyer. if you go for a DZ, be cautious.
If you just want something that looks correct, start with a 350 (virtually identical on the outside, and build up from there.
As for "numbers match" it used to be that it meant VIN on engine and tranny matched the car's VIN, any more it is becoming more that the parts are properly dated and coded for your car, what I would call "numbers correct."
melav8r Oct 31st, 07, 05:28 PM You can still build a date correct engine. The '69 DZ used the same block as a '69 327 or 350 but in a 4 bolt main. There were 4 different castings used for the DZ block and all have a casting date. So it depends on what the build date of your car is to determine which block is appropriate. The heads were 3927186 castings and they also have a cast in build dates.
Happy hunting.

I was just looking at a post on here yesterday which gave a great deal of info for building a high performance 302 out of a 327 block. If you can't find it, let me know and I'll send it to you. Given it is a clone, do you really want to go to all the trouble? There are so many other motor/trans/rearend options that will give great performance. Charlie 69 RS
68zproject Oct 31st, 07, 05:54 PM 69 z heads $1000.
69 z crank $1000.
69 DZ block $1000.
rest of the parts to complete a "correct" DZ engine: $5k-$7K.
If it's not a real Z, you could buy a lot more for the money engine wise. There are people that have been looking for date correct parts for their cars and engines for years on here. Just look at ads.
78MBA Oct 31st, 07, 06:05 PM No 67-69 Z/28 used a 350, you must have read that wrong. What it probably said was that they used a 350 core with a 283 crank to make a 302. The 302 was the largest engine allowed in SCCA Trans Am racing in which the Z/28 was competing and became famous. To make a correct clone of a Z/28 you must use a "DZ" 302 which can be hard to find and are fairly expensive. For more info on the Z/28 you can visit Camaro Research Group. Make sure if you are trying to create a correct clone for yourself that you realize all Z/28 cars were also 4 speeds.

RamAirDave Oct 31st, 07, 07:20 PM No year of Z/28 used a 350
No first gen Zs, but they started putting 350s in Zs in 1970. Automatic was available that year also
Nothing really special about a DZ block other than the stamping.

Sorry, should have clarified but we were talking about first gen cars.
