team camaro, can someone out there tell me the difference between an original AM/FM-mono, and an AM/FM-stereo radio? the serial model numbers for the two are 91BFP1(mono) and 91BFM1(stereo). what is the difference between the two? the quality, etc. which would you prefer? when i bought my rs/ss, the original radio had been taken from the car and i have the option to buy a 91BFP1. if someone could help me asap, i would appretiate it. thank again. -dan

Mono stereo systems take all channnels and combine them into one output. Stereo systems have 2 or 4 channel outputs so that you can place the sound in different parts of the car. Stereo is usually the preferrred option and has better sound quality. (prepare to pay!) I believe the mono stereos for the 69 had 1 speaker in the dash. I believe the stereo systems has 2 speakers in the dash and 2 in the rear. (Not positive on that!) My plan is take an original mono and run to center dash speaker. Then put an aftermarket CD player in the glovebox and run two speakers under the dash and 2 to the rear.

They make a two speaker unit that fits into the single front speaker area. I made my own because I wanted a pair of 3 ways. I think mine is 4-3/4". I used the frame of the original speaker and cut away all but the lip and a little to be able to screw it onto the speaker board I made. Then I put the original rubber gasket back on, and glued a piece of speaker cloth over it. When in place, it looks like an original speaker.

For the rears, I used modern 4 way, modified to mount from underneath. On top are repop original speaker grilles, so they look stock, too. The modern speakers do stick down farther, so my spare tire did not fit all the way back into place. Solved the problem with an offset J hook.
