I've tried to keep it all neat and organized... pull everything out and hose her down a few times a year... But this year, she's gotten away from me, big time.

For those who were watching the ill fated other post, here's my new wall, from the "family's side"
http://home.comcast.net/~Jimragtop2/new_wall.jpg
That leaves ME with a space 22 feet wide and 25 feet deep, not counting the "cubby."

I need to figure out some better places to put my "stuff"!
I'm almost embarrassed to post these pics.

So... starting just inside the garage door to the left, this handy lil cubby can hold all sorts of stuff, and it does, damn what a mess...
http://home.comcast.net/~Jimragtop2/cubby.jpg
A lil bit further back on that wall, these racks hold all the "lawn tools" I guess they have to stay.
http://home.comcast.net/~Jimragtop2/lawn.jpg

There's not a whole lot of room in front of the camaro, maybe enough for one of the brown cabinets, or maybe I'll just leave it open. No pic.
http://home.comcast.net/~Jimragtop2/front.jpg
The other side of the "back", I've all ready pulled down those wire shelves. I'm gonna put my workbench there, it will fit with 2 feet left over for the drill press I want to buy, and moving the bench will free up enough width to work with both cars in the garage.
Here's the bench as it is now. 12' by 30". It's become a disaster, shame on me.
http://home.comcast.net/~Jimragtop2/workbench.jpg
Here's a closeup of those cabinets above the bench. They've become a catchall for all sorts of crap. Not sure about even keeping them, they are hard for me to reach without a step stool, and they shade the bench something awful
http://home.comcast.net/~Jimragtop2/cabinets.jpg
Finally, the right hand corner up by the garage door. Tool box (15 Lbs of sh*t stuffed in a 10 lb bag!) is there, along with those pegboards where all sorts of junk hangs.

So what would you do to organize that mess?
What kind of shelves and cabinets and things?
Open or enclosed?

I'll need places to organize nuts and bolts and hardware, both car stuff and house stuff. The baby food jars ain't doing it, they keep falling down and breaking. Most of my small car hardware is in that tackle box on the bench, works good, but could use 2 or 3 more.

A lot of that stuff will get thrown out. Hoping to move all the paint cans to the basement or something. Still waiting for mud to dry so I can paint that wall, and then move the bench and start putting things back together. Right now I have a big pile of "keepers", "maybe keepers, and "find someplace elde to putters" right where my vette should live.

A buddy of mine just did his garage up with a "knock off" version of this...

http://www.handiwall.com/handiwall.html

He said this product was quite spendy but found a local manufacturer of a similar slatwall who was nearly half the price.....

pretty cool stuff....very modular!

They tore down an old hotel here a few years ago. I went and bought a bunch of the cabinets out of the kitchen units. The garage still isn't clean, but a lot of the mess is out of sight. lol

Jim.
I did my whole garage with those cheap white home depot cabinets. They come in pieces in a box. There not that expensive also. I wanted to hide everything. All you see now is cabinets.

I made a bench like yours also across the entire wall. When I did the cabinets I went out and bought some standard hinges and 3/4 plywood I painted white. I made my own base cabinets to put my welder, jacks, extension cords, chop saw, vise, grinder, drills ect.....ect..... The only shelves you can see is my 30 model car collection. Hope it helps some.

This site has some COOL stuff!
action=category&id=272 -- poop... something happened to the link, and then I lost the site!
Went to Menards, they have some ok stuff. I may get the rubbermaid wall cabinets to put on the family's side to put all thier crap in.

Mark, those white cabinets over my bench are the home depot ones. They've held up pretty well. Hard to keep organized tho, and hard to put small stuff in, just turns into a big pile after awhile.

I need bins and drawers.

And plastic. Is it wrong to want plastic? I've had "pressed board" if it's anywhere near the floor it self destructs. I've had metal, opened the one where I keep my pool chemicals today, the entire area is RUSTY! Must be that opened then resealed gallon of muriatic acid...

Shouldn't the Pike be mounted above the fireplace? :D J/K Try to utilize your ceiling best you can. You can hide a "lotta stuff" up there. Just a suggestion.

I also built a 'space' above where the garage door is near the ceiling. I gained about 2' of area where we keep big stuff thats wide and cumbersome, like swinging chair canopy, rolled up rugs when wife changes decor in the entry and other misc. crap :)
I also hang a ton of stuff from my ceiling and trust it wont drop.
The other stuff the guys have shown are cool too.

The Pike (actually she's a walleye) was once in my home office, but since we moved here, the wife has not allowed her into the house. Maybe I should take her to work and put her up there?

Been searching, and now I'm seriiously bummed. I found the ultimate car guy storage system, but I'll never have it. http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_6970_200072924_200072924

We have some of the Rubbermaid storage units (tall locker/shelf unit and a 3 drawer unit). They work well actually, wife uses to hold all her homeschool stuff, so they are packed with books, etc. The shelves haven't bowed from the weight. I think they'd be good in a garage.

For screws, bolts, electrical parts, etc. I used to have those drawer units like RSS has on his workbench, but everytime I move, the movers pack them upside down or something and I end up resorting.

Now I have some of these:
http://www.fastenal.com/web/products/detail.ex?sku=63006
They have different size compartments and have a rack so each one slides out like a drawer. Pack like items in same drawer, and then you can carry the whole drawer to the job...ie all the electrical connectors, fuses, etc. or interior screws. Only drawback is that you can't see whats in them without opening them...so I put the label maker to work.

Edit: I got the small part/bolt organizer unit at HF, but I can't find it on their website...I just used Fastenal as an example. I think my drawers are a little smaller

All the spray cans & chemicals you have not used in the past years should go into the trash can. I would not put spray bomb in the house or basement.

Pool chemicals in a plastic bin. Nice wall.

Hey Jim , Im doing fall clean up too. Lots of fun thats for sure! I cant belive how much just need to be pitched. My rule is if I havent needed it in two years its gone. ( not including Camaro stuff) I find that if I take everything out and put it back I gain square footage some how. I put screws along the studs in my shed and hang as much as I can. In the basement I use beg board lots goes on that. Then a couple of white pressboard cabinets for the unhangables. For a beer I will come and look at it with you, Rain days excluded.

I am in process of organizing. I like metal cabinets for the walls. The ones I plan on getting are similar if not exactly like the ones listed in Northerntool. I am not a big fan of the bids for small parts, but it's certainly the neatest for the small stuff. Something like this http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/wwg/productIndex.shtml?operator=keywordSearch&search_type=keyword&QueryString=7d418&submit.x=28&submit.y=7
Although having on on wheels would be nicer IMO.

The problem with that hge cabinet you posted witht he bins and doors is the floor space. It looks like you would have to have an area of about 6' deep clear just to be able to have the cabinet and allow the doors to open and close. I don't think that is reasonable unless it was a big shop or the like. Although the concept is good. Probably bad for trying to clean around/behind too.

Jim, you might look for a used office furniture outlet. They have tons of used metal shelving and cabinets you can get for a song. I've bought several and they work well in a garage for storage. They're sturdy and cheap, the shelves are adjustable and can even be stacked if secured. The wife buys those rubbermaid storage units at any retailer like Target. They keep the small stuff organized and can also be stacked. Good luck!

Jim,

A little pricey but, these are nice for all your aerosol cans and oil. You will be able to see them all instead of moving everything in the cabinet to find one.

Easily built with wood and can look a lot nicer. Ever subscribe to a magazine called The Family Handyman? You should check it out. You can get storage editions on their website or at Home Depot (many other places that carry mags, also). I've built many of their projects (usually modified slightly to fit my needs) and have never been wanting for storage since. I've built a few of the projects on the following links, one of my favorites were the cabinets listed as Project 1 on this link:

http://www.rd.com/familyhandyman/content/18207/

I prefer open storage, but OTS doors could be easily added. Another of my favorite projects is a wood storage wall, which is used for much more than wood storage. It's difficult to describe, but can take some pics for you if you want 'em. To give you an idea of how much it can store... on the top 15" deep shelf of this system (using only half the length), I can fit nearly 30 2x4s.

Here are random links to other solution from TFH:

Some good ideas.

I may just elect to paint the metal cabinets I have, dunno yet. Found some pretty nice plastic cabinets at Lowes, from Black and Decker. May also just keep my "over the bench" cabinets, they are in good shape, and it's not thier fault that I've been just throwing stuff in there to the point that it all falls on me when I open the doors!

First things first, I need to get that bench moved. Got the final coat of mud on the new drywall last night, will prime it tonight. Ordered the "anti spider" stuff and will paint that wall as soon as it comes in, then get the bench moved. Then I'll have to rearrange the electrical outlets and lighting.

I need some bins of some kind to organize the small stuff.
Making some not so deep cabinets to fill with bins full of small stuff is a good idea.

I much prefer cabinets with doors. Garage gets very dirty and dusty, open shelves = everything on/in them gets dirty and dusty too.

Your garage doesn't look too messy to me. I think if you add some shelves out of the way, up high and a few cabinets and your set. I like those under-cab jar storage things. They remind me of my Grampa who was into those also (he also liked the cigar boxes).

Costco has some very cool adjustable shelving and storage compartment/bin options. I'd stay away from plastic shelves though if I where you. You sure don't want one of those chinsy legs braking on a cold winter's day and having stuff hit your Camaro.

Well, I did it... 3 hours in the garage today. Found someplace (temporary) to stash all the stuff on the floor from the shelves I took down. Cleaned the workbench. On top and underneath. Completely empty. Working late tomorrow, but hopefully Saturday I'll move the workbench.

I feel naked, I've never seen my workbench empty before

:thumbsup:Hey Jim, Remember the pics of my garage earlier this year (not clean) but when it is clean I have plenty of space. I built all of it out of 2x4s, 4x4s, 3/4 inch plywood, cost me about 300 bucks & a weekend. But the cool thing about doing it with lumber is you can build it the way you want it to look. You can see in my pic how I built a spot expecially for my craftsman chest & left a spot open for my furnace which I am going to cover with louvered door panels so it can breath & be easy to get to. You can see its not done yet but I started working on car again & couldnt stop till it was on the road again. but plan to finished it soon. I want to put all my trophies up above the cupboards. I like working with wood also, thats why I chose this route. Just an idea, talk to ya later. As you can also see I did get the car out on the road again.:beers:

sixtyate- How close do you park to those? I am thinking of getting work benchs with open shelves because I don't want to have to park the cars 3 or 4 feet away just so I can get the drawers/doors open and stand in front. But I do like the hidden (cabinet) look. I have some time but I am certainly sucking up the ideas around here...PICTURES ARE REALLY HELPFUL.
I don't want to set up my shop and be sorry I did something later. I want to think about it and do it right the first time. So I am taking my time.

Well.... its a 20x20 garage and the only car in there is my 68 :) I have plenty of room around the car so no problems. I am about 4 feet away from the work area. I like to be able to open the car doors and work on it without having to open and close them every time you want to walk from one side to the other.

Scott..no I don't :) I had the roll-away tool chest 4 years now and bought the other items on sale a bit at a time and stored them untill I was ready to use them. All cabinets and roll aways total including the top that I made is about $1200.00 . The wall cabinets were just on sale for $99.00 each :)

The top is very stable because there is a 5/8 inch high lip on the top of the cabinet bases. I cut 5/8 plywood and fit it into it, screwed the top into that. Once the wheels are locked...its fine. Heck..I stood on it putting up the wall cabinets yesterday :)

Slow progress... I got the workbench moved from the side to the back wall, and did a lil painting. Bought 2 black and decker plastic storage cabinets and put them on her side and loaded em up with all the pool stuff and lawn and garden stuff, still got room for all the left over paint cans!

This is clearing things out a lot on MY side!

Emptied and cleaned the white cabinets that were over the workbench, will get them moved back over the workbench, and move the wiring and lighting ASAP.
Wondering if I should keep the babyfood jars? Thinking no, they look like crap, and the lids don't have the best threads, they tend to fall down a lot.

Need to find some decent but cheap storage bins to hold nuts and bolts and hardware.

Gonna keep the tan metal cabinets, put the between the windows on the side, and dress em up with a coat of semi gloss black paint with silver / gray doors.

Been drooling over this toolbox in Lowe's. China's best, just under a grand, 41" wide by near 6 feet tall, all welded polished stainless steel. Lift cylinder on the lid, power plugs built in, lots of lined drawers with ball bearing double slides... No way would I spend that on a toolbox, but did show it to the wife, thinking she may buy it for me for christmas!
Here's the top half:

If you are considering a shed take Dennis's advise and go with the Tuff Shed. I bought one too this Fall, only shed I know of that's 2x4 construction and high quality. The Home Depot carries this line and this year but you could only purchase them site built, which means expensive compared to other kit sheds. This year Tuff Shed decided to off the 8x8 and 10x10 as a kit you could put up yourself, same high quality, primed siding, 2x4 construction, ect. My son and I put it up in a day and a half over a weekend and saved about 40 % of the cost of the site built. That's more money left for the Camaro!

How many bins do you think you would want?
Or how about overall size you would prefer?
Would you like it to hang on the wall, or set on the bench, or sit on the floor?

By knowing what you want/need, this will help me determine if what I have would even be useful for you (And save me a trip to get a picture;))

ya, need something just like that, with lil clear plastic drawers!

Moving along, slowly. Got power and lighting to the new workbench location. Painted my lil pegboard, put it up, and put up the (now cleaned) white cabinets. Sounds like we're eating leftovers tionight rather than going out for Friday night all you can eat crab legs (I'm a steak guy, but the wife really enjoys dicecting those fishy things and pulling out the millimeter sized pieces of pseudo meat!) so tonight will get the roller out and paint some official people repelling white paint on as much of the rest of the garage as I can get.

This time, the roller cover gets bagged and set outside til garbage day. Might help.

ok, been working very hard the past week.

My side of the garage is painted, except for the "cubby" which is just too full to mess with.
The big pegboards in the front corner are painted, and everything hung up in nice lil rows...:D

Those big ugly tan steel commercial cabinets have been cleaned, painted (rustoleum "hammered", black on the sides, frames, and front edges of the shelves, silver on the doors and inside.) I lined the shelves with thick clear plastic "carpet runner" to save the paint. They look great.

Purchased some Stanley "hang up bins" and attached the hangers to the inside of the cabinet doors. Handy but out of site. Each bin just pops off, so I can take em where I need to use em. 72 for now, room for more if I need them.

Ordered 550 SF of black and white checkered MotoFloor a couple days ago!

Spent a couple hours taking "things" out of boxes and finding a place to put them. Now have 7 empty boxes, lots of "things" put in thier place. Still need to emptry those baby food jars, but can almost see the top of the workbench!

It's really bad to see the evidence that you made so many trips to Menards to buy things you all ready had!
