View Full Version : Rustoleum paint 7777 dal777 Nov 4th, 07, 07:42 PM Anybody know the new part # for the 7777? It is the semi-gloss black. THANKS Eric Kammerer Nov 4th, 07, 08:09 PM 7777 is actually satin. 7777830 - Black But, the last three digits "830" identifies it as a satin spray can (all the colors end in 830). The quart is 7777502 Frankrentef Nov 5th, 07, 06:07 AM Is the 7777502 the correct paint for the 67 Interior (metal) i.e. door panels and dash front? Anyone ever use an air brush to apply this? Eric Kammerer Nov 5th, 07, 11:59 AM Well... The Ditzler refinish for the 67 semi-gloss black is 9248; the Ditzler for 68 and 69 is 9266. I have never looked at a 67 and 68 side by side, but I recall the 67 being slightly more gloss. If you search "9248" here there's some discussion. I think 9266 and 7777 RustOleum are too close to tell, so if 9248 isn't a lot glossier than 9266 (or you're okay with "pretty correct"), then 7777 should be fine in a 67. 7777 is one of those paints that light coats, with each applied while the previous is still a little wet, will come out a little glossier than one coat or coats allowed to fully dry between re-coating. The quarts are pretty thick, made for brushing or rolling. Label says it can be thinned up to 15% with acetone for spraying. I have thinned and sprayed it out of a general purpose siphon feed paint gun (1.4 mm tip) with no problems, but I'm not sure it would go through an airbrush nozzle (not sure what the biggest tip available is, but aren't most in the 0.3 mm range?). I think you'd be better off with the rattle can. Frankrentef Nov 6th, 07, 07:16 AM Does anyone know of any pictures showing the rattle can results? THNX KevinW Nov 6th, 07, 07:31 AM I painted these 67 shock plates with 7777 spray can, getting them ready for auction. If there wasn't pits, it would have looked much nicer. http://www.fototime.com/88F479258C7FC2D/standard.jpg http://www.fototime.com/A19E38DF157868E/standard.jpg Unreal Nov 6th, 07, 08:31 AM I painted my entire underside, subframe, inner fenders, core support and firewall with 7777. The toss-up was whether to paint with something tough, like powdercoat, but would be difficult to touch up, or something not so tough, like Rustolium, that would be easy to touch up. Easy touch up won out. O course, if I had it to do over, I would not have painted the bottom black, I would have primed it red or gray, and had the body color overspray on it. Didn't know about that when I did the underside. Daral Nov 6th, 07, 01:29 PM Here you go. Everything that is black is 7777. It was so close to the original I can't tell the difference. http://www.camaros.net/showroom/data/500/September_24_07_004SM.jpg Gambitt Nov 6th, 07, 03:27 PM Is Rustoleum 7777 chemical resistant? Eric Kammerer Nov 6th, 07, 04:16 PM As much as any rattle can enamel paint is... tomg Nov 6th, 07, 05:53 PM where can 7777 be purchased? I looked for it at Home Depot and Wal Mart, but they do not have it (not that number). Gambitt Nov 6th, 07, 08:28 PM I realize it is better than rattle cans, but I doubt it is as good as a two part paint. I bet brake fluid will eat it right up. I would prefer to stick with something that uses a hardener. Anything is better than a rattle though in my experience...I used spray cans for many years. Eric Kammerer Nov 6th, 07, 08:47 PM I bet brake fluid will eat it right up. Man, now I'm curious, and I'll have to set up a test panel :) Eric Kammerer Nov 6th, 07, 08:56 PM where can 7777 be purchased? I looked for it at Home Depot and Wal Mart, but they do not have it (not that number). Tom, want to meet me at WalMart in Morgantown and I'll hand it to you?? :):);) I may go to Hazleton Friday, maybe I can drop a few by your place?? Okay, all good natured kidding aside, it's at both those places in this area, but you may not know what it looks like. Top part of label front is the Rust-Oleum name, under in green is "SATIN", then "Classic Low-Sheen Finish", and then a picture of a round patio table, part of a shutter and flower planter. Oh heck, let's see if I can link it without Photobucketing the .jpg... http://www.rustoleum.com/CBGProduct.asp?pid=25 Gambitt Nov 7th, 07, 06:30 AM Eric, I'm very interested in your test. I hope I am wrong because I would like to use it myself. RockinRob Nov 7th, 07, 07:51 AM I used the 7777 on the underside, over epoxy primer. Also used it on the firewall. http://www.camaros.net/showroom/data/500/medium/dscf0043.jpg thinned it using acetone, per the directions on can. I pretty pleased with the results. Will be using it on the dash also in the next few days. Rob Gambitt Nov 7th, 07, 01:59 PM That looks really nice Rob. When can you get the underside of my car?:) tomg Nov 7th, 07, 06:05 PM Eric, no kidding, the Wal Mart and Home Depot up here do not have that style black, guess I'll be checking Lowes next. Thanks for the link though. Eric Kammerer Nov 7th, 07, 08:51 PM really? That's nuts. You'd think with the... (Mennonite joke deleted) no69x-44 Nov 7th, 07, 09:21 PM Eric, no kidding, the Wal Mart and Home Depot up here do not have that style black, guess I'll be checking Lowes next. Thanks for the link though. Maybe check your local Ace Hardware store or smaller local hardware store guy. If they don't have it, they may be able to order it for you. May pay a few cents more, but they just may stock it. Daral Nov 8th, 07, 06:42 AM Check the label on the back lower part of the can for the number 7777. They make several black finishes so I always check the label on the back. Eric - Ha! I use to live in Coatesville so I probably heard that Mennonite joke. Eric Kammerer Nov 8th, 07, 07:29 AM I was just going to go with something like the stores in Berks Co. are out because there was a bunch of bumper painting before the fall barn dance...but then I thought about it, and realized that because modern cars don't have chrome bumpers, it really wasn't funny. Not that it was that funny to start with... Wonder if I can make money "exporting" 7777 to points north? Anyway, I have two test plates painted with rattle can 7777, and I'll let them sit a few days, then I'll "spill" brake fluid on them and see what happens. Unreal Nov 8th, 07, 09:07 AM I went to high school in Boyertown. Lived in Exton before moving to Chattanooga in 89 Daral Nov 8th, 07, 09:59 AM 7777 probably has too much gloss for black bumper Mennonite. I saw many of those cars while growing up. tomg Nov 8th, 07, 06:39 PM Unreal, small world, I grew up near RT 562, didn't go to Boyertown High though. That is a nice town. Wish I could convince the wife to move south, tired of the cold. Mike68RS Nov 8th, 07, 07:28 PM Anyway, I have two test plates painted with rattle can 7777, and I'll let them sit a few days, then I'll "spill" brake fluid on them and see what happens. What will happen is the brake fluid will attack the enamel and bubble it up. Mike Eric Kammerer Nov 8th, 07, 11:29 PM Right. But I think the question is how long will it take, to see if it's immediate or takes a while to break through. RamAirDave Nov 8th, 07, 11:39 PM If it doesnt mention any chemical resistance, then it wont take too long. A spill that is wiped up quickly probably wont lift the paint, but if you have a leak going, it'll likely pull the paint. Eric Kammerer Nov 8th, 07, 11:43 PM Yeah, I guess I really don't care, as my inner fenders are 9266 single stage (DCC). I like to see paint wrinkle :) . Maybe after it lifts, I'll set them on fire (hehhehehehemmehehmm, FIRE!). And then shoot them. And then.... RamAirDave Nov 8th, 07, 11:46 PM Well... brake fluid is flammable. Learned that by accident one day :D fishin4info Nov 9th, 07, 06:42 AM If I have brake fluid leaking all over my firewall and inner fenders, I think I might be a little more worried about how am I going to stop the car, than the bubbling paint. I am still not sold on using the Rustoleum but not because of brake fluid will eat the paint. I do not know what you guys are doing but I have never spilled fluids on the car and do not plan on it. Gambitt Nov 9th, 07, 02:24 PM I don't think anyone ever plans on it, but let's just say you are driving down a street and a parked car has a brake fluid leak, you drive through the puddle, thinking it is just water. These kinda things happen all the time. It doesn't have to be just brake fluid either...ther are lots of bad chemicals out there on the streets. |
