: COLD AIR?

I've got a problem with cold air coming in from the air vent on the pastner side of my 69? The vent control is closed down below. Any one know what would be causing this? Thanks and God bless all.

First let me say welcome to the best site on the web! graemlins/waving.gif This is really a great source of info.

Your likely culprit is simply that the seals in the kick panel are worn out. There is a seal that attaches to the flapper which should seal the vent when in the closed position. Alternatively, if the air is coming from behind the panel (rather than through the vent) the putty that seals the panel to the sheetmetal may not be fully sealing anymore.

Good luck with it. Getting that driver's side panel out is kind of a pain. Have to pull out the parking brake pedal (at least I had to on my '68).

on an AC vehicle that flapper has a spring on it, it also have a vacuum diaphram controlled unit that reverses whatever the spring is set for. Anyhow you probably have that vacuum tube disconnected, just pop off the cover (a few screws) and you should be able to see whats going on with the door. Also there is a vacuum controlled door in the cowl passenger side that lets air in from the base of the windshield into that area, check this unit as well for proper operation. All these vacuum devices are controlled by the unit attached to the back of the slider controls, which gets its vacuum feed from the canister under the driver fender near the booster, which gets its feed from the engine.

Thnak for the help!. graemlins/thumbsup.gif But, the air is coming in from the dash air vent on the pastners side of the car. Divers side is OK no cold air. Again tanks and God bless all. James NC

In that case, the heater box under the dash needs the seals replaced. Ricks (http://www.rickscamaros.com/cgi-local/SoftCart.exe/online-store/scstore/blankp.htm?E+scstore) has the seal kits, as does our sponser Ground Up Restorations. (http://www.ss396.com/index1-camaro.htm)

You're welcome James.

But I might be thinking of the wrong vent than what you're talking about. I meant the defrost slots on top of the dash. Air would be coming from both of them if the heater box seals were leaking. They're fed off of the same -Y- shaped duct. If you mean the vent facing the passenger seat, that one is fed from the cowl plenum and the kick panel seals are the culprit, like John and Brian mentioned.
Sorry about that.

Also the passenger vent has a open/close lever by your kick panel that lets you open or close this vent. Also its gets its feed of air via the hose material running above the glovebox from the y split area in the middle, over the glovebox, to the air vent on the right side.

The corner dash vents on a 69 without A/C go straight out thru an air valve into the cowl. They bring outside air directly into the car. The air valve bolted right to the inside of the firewall with three large headed screws and is operated by the cable attached to the upper slide lever on the kick panel (there are two slides).

If the valve is leaking a lot of air then the slide is probably disconnected, or the clamp that holds the outer shell of the cable in place near the valve is loose allowing the outer jacket to move instead of the inner wire. There are no seals associated with the air valve, only the rectangular duct opening in the dash.

Here's the Fisher Body passenger side air inlet duct that connects to the instrument panel air outlet with the hose; the top slide on the kickpad operates a bowden cable that opens and closes the air valve in the duct:

James,
this happened to me a while ago and I still haven't corrected it. The culprit was the cable that operates the flapper/door wasn't pushing like it was intended. I believe that the closing action is a push on the cable , although I could be wrong.
