I am looking for pictures of our beloved Camaro's that are bumperless in the front. I have seen a few that are bumperless and really like the look. Is there a law against it? Looking at doing this in the winter. I also have a question about doing this. I have stared at the bumper and wondered if and how to take the brakets off the front. Looks as if they are under the fender??????

Rich,

Looks great. Ever think about putting some mesh in the front valance?

Another thread on this:

As far as whether it's legal, no it's probably not. Most states have some regulation/statue/vehicle code that prohibits removal of factory installed "safety" equipment. If you have annual safety inspections, you may be failed for the lack of a front bumper. If you run up against law enforcement folks with nothing better to do, you may be ticketed.

That said, I like the look, and ran my 68 that way (there's a link to my pic in the thread above). But, I had antique tags (no annual safety inspection) and the cops here are either too busy or fellow gearheads. It was never an issue.

It's easy to do. The outer brackets are attached through the fender lip ( think of a sandwich... fender lip, inner fender, bracket, fender extension with J-nut), so you just go in behind the front part of the fender, undo a couple bolts, and the brackets pull right out. If you don't do any bodywork to fill the small gap you have left, it is always easy to re-install later.

As far as compromising safety, well... I can't recall what the rating on those bumpers was (2.5 mph???) but they certainly are not massive. I have heard of guys taking a bumper with a bad finish, sectioning it, and mounting it behind the valence with modified original brackets. Seemed too much like work through.

I want to remove my bumper and install a 69 RS/SS lower valance on mine. I think that would be SWEET. I love the lights and the look of the lower valance on a 69.

That's been talked about a lot of times too. The lip up top is different, so I think the consensus was that the easiest/least bodywork way to do it is get a 69 valence (ain't no RS valence for 69, we've all got lights below the bumper where they should be :) ), cut out the center, and graft it onto a 67/68 val. the other benefit to that is you could have true driving lights. Isn't Danica Patrick's red Camaro doens something like that?

Thats what turned me on to it. I had thought about it in the past but never seen what it would look like in person...TWO KEWL.

P.S. If I score a straighter 69 val for my car prior to paint, I'll ship you this one to cut up. The dings are out by the bumper brackets, so it'd be perfect. Of course, you'd have to Astro-proof it...

Not really, but an intercooler on each side supporting a couple of turbos would be pretty cool. The law doesn't bother me, at least not for the bumper, there more concerned about noise and traveling light speed on there highways. Good luck with your decision. Also its a nut and bolt job to remove it, not difficult at all.

Can the stock chrome front bumper on a 69 be replaced by the endura bumper, if so what all does it entail?

www.ss396.com (ground up) sells the bumper and inner and outer brackets. I have been considering it but have not looked into the details yet.

Do you have to have an RS front end to use the endura bumper or can it be used with the stock style front ends?

Not certain but I think they'll interchange. Standing by for experts,,,, Oh no Wait! That's me!;)
OK, thinking,,,,, Yeah, should work. I've heard the brackets are different. Also if you're a restoration freak you need the blue bumper jack;

I see a bumper on this car.
I also like the no bumper look but I think the spots where the brackets are should be cleaned up I don't like the empty spot left behind by the removal of the bumper.

Sheeeze Bob, I said it was a "look", not that I had no bumper.

I know just trying to be funny a painted bumper on a 69 looks good but I don't think it would go over very well on a 67 like mine or a 68. Yours just looks like a enduro bumper, Also at least you can drive yours mine is all apart and I got a bad back and cant work so I know what its like not to have a lot of money.

Just took my front bumper off last week, I kind of like the look. I'll see if it grows on me. I will admit it does look different. It's either a love it or hate it kind of thing.
