A friend of mine has a 68 camaro he thinks its an SS. He doesnt have the build sheet or protecto plate. How can he find out if it is a real SS or fake.

Welcome to TC! This gets asked a lot, but unfortunately the search engine won't allow you to search "68 SS" (both are too common or too short).

lots of hard work went into the Camaro Research Group's site, www.camaros.org . Here's the page for 68.

Also checkout the decoding buttons on the top left.

68s are the hardest to verfiy without a numbers matching drivetrain, but you can get some clues for an educated guess.

First is the easiest - if it is an original big block car, it's an SS. For now though, I will assume it's a small block, has a V8 VIN (starting 124) on dash, and has a non-matching small block in it now.

- 68 SS all had 12 bolt rear axles. The assembly stamp date on the front side of the right axle tube should be close to the trim tag assembly date.

- 68 SS all had the domed SS hood, and had 28 coils on the hood springs (vs. 26 for standard hood). Plenty of folks swap hoods, but most forget the coils.

- 68 SS all had dual exhaust, and would have rivnuts on the driver side frame rail behind the rear axle for the hanger. Search "rivnut" here and you should find a picture. Duals could be ordered as an option on the 327 cars, so dual exhaust alone is not conclusive.

Those are the quick and easy ones. Post back (or turn your buddy on to us) with more details, pics, etc., and we'll try to help.
