View Full Version : Lonely red wire

I recently replaced the 2 wiring harnesses in the engine compartment of my '67. The good news is evrything went well and works great. But, on the lighting harness there is a red wire that runs all the way to the front passenger headlight area. On the harness I removed this wire was cut, and not connected to anything. Where is this wire supposed to be connected and what is its purpose?

I also have a 3 wire alternator. I have the 2 wires attached to the plug, 1 red wire from the voltage regulater and another wire from the firewall connected to the big post on the alternator. My ground plug on the alternator has never had a wire on it since I got the car. Is it necessary to ground the alternator from alternator ground post?

The alternator was not grounded in Camaros.

The red wire in your new harness went to a junction block on the rad support, where the small wire off the pos battery cable also connected. The wire comes from the horn relay.

The wire from the firewall should also connect to the horn relay, same with the red wires from the alternator and the voltage reg.

There are pictures of all this in the "what it is, Where it is" sticky in Electical

The alternator was not grounded in Camaros...

The alternator was grounded through the metal bracketry to the engine block. Usually it is not necessary to run a ground wire to the alternator shell. Occationally folks will have problems with powder coated brackets and such making a ground wire one option of getting a good alternator ground, but usually it isn't required.

Sorry, if you read my posts you'll see that being wordy is my MO. Just want to be clear. Every bit of amperage carried by the red wire is also carried by the case ground - which is significant.

The ground stud on the alternator was used on '67 Corvettes for a ground wire to the voltage regulator base, as the VR was mounted on a fiberglass inner fender.
