View Full Version : Tulip Panels
no69x-44 Jun 8th, 04, 05:33 PM I have the front clip pretty much off my '69. There are cruved panels behind the fender that come up an meet the firewall (below the heater blower motor and near the door is the right one. I believe that they called Tulip Panels. Mine are rusted out at the bottom near the rockers and floor. They rest of the panel is in good shape. Can these be sheet metal repaired/saved or do they need some how need to be replaced? If they do need replacing, where do you cut them? Thanks in advance.
MrDanB Jun 8th, 04, 05:55 PM no69x44, i believe that you are talking about your inner fender wells?! The tulip panel is the piece directly below the back light (rear window)...The replacemant of the inner fender wells are pretty straight forward. if you don't have a Camaro body assembly manual, I would suggest that you get one off ebay or somewhere. They show "exploded" views of how all the sheetmetal fits together! ;) Good luck!

See this other post....
Previous Thread (http://www.camaros.net/forum/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=3;t=005876#000001)
There are two very distinct sides to this debate. There are guys who think the tulip panel is in the front (like me) and also in Rick's 1st Gen catalog.
Then there are those who think that it is in the rear between the 1/4s....
Who knows anyway....
Those 'curved panels' are available through Rick's and various other vendors... They are spot welded on, can be removed easily, and can be put back easily too.
You'll need a scraper, some sandpaper, a spot weld cutter, a drill, and a welder.
You might try to see if they are available through 'Ground Up' (the sponsor of this site)... kick some biz their way....
RS3SDL2MG Jun 9th, 04, 02:33 AM tulip panels are right behind the front fenders one left and one right , they are spot welded on you can drill the spot welds out to remove them , the part under the rear glass is called the rear deck filler panel , graemlins/clonk.gif  graemlins/clonk.gif

HwyStarJoe Jun 9th, 04, 02:58 AM When I saw this post, I got all flushed and started sweating!! tongue.gif
Let's not start that debate! Once and for all while referring to those 'tulip shaped panels' on the sides of the cowl while visiting Team Camaro BODY SHOP, they will be called TULIP PANELS!!
That flat panel that 'fills' the area under the rear window and above the trunk opening will be called the 'rear deck filler panel'!
Got it? Good! graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Now, back to the question that no69x-44 asked....
no69x-44 Jun 9th, 04, 05:48 AM Just for the record ... the part I was talking about is the one that djunod posted from Rick's. To tell you the truth ... I have looked at this thing from 30 different angles and still can't figure out why it's called a "tulip" panel. Doesn't look anything like a tulip to me graemlins/clonk.gif
If they just called the dang thing a "cowl" panel and left at that ... all would have been OK :D
Thanks for the posts guys. This welding stuff is getting old. Hopefully after the front floor pans, toe boards, trunk floor and now these flower power panels, that's it for a while!
HwyStarJoe Jun 9th, 04, 06:40 AM Imagine the tulip petals upside down.

MrDanB Jun 9th, 04, 02:23 PM Sorry guys, I didn't know it was a "hot button". I'll call it whatever ya like :D It was my upholsterer guy who called the "filler panel" the tulip panel. What a strange name  Oh well, that's why this site is so great...we learn a little every day ;)

Rogue Wave Jun 9th, 04, 05:43 PM Hopefully after the front floor pans, toe boards, trunk floor and now these flower power panels, that's it for a while! Oh but there's still a whole car waiting for your attention.
Good luck and have fun. graemlins/beers.gif
no69x-44 Jun 9th, 04, 11:02 PM Rogue -- And don't I know it! Maybe all those years ago I should have gotten a plastic car ... like a Vette :D
HwyStarJoe -- I stand corrected. Guess I never looked at it upside down, But OK, I guess it does look like a an upside Tulip Pedal after all ... ROFL Thanks for clearing that up ;)
Rogue Wave Jun 10th, 04, 08:36 AM ... I should have gotten a plastic car ... like a Vette :D Definately less metal involved... but equally as fun. graemlins/beers.gif
KURT Jun 12th, 04, 01:39 PM Here is the solution. The panel in front of the deck lid is the "two-lip" Panel (kind of has two lips) and the ones that are spot welded to the cowl are the tulip panels.
HwyStarJoe Jun 12th, 04, 03:06 PM LOL!
Works for me!
MrDanB Jun 12th, 04, 03:55 PM KURT, Are you a politician?lol :D
