I recently became aware of someone who is selling a 1979 Camaro Convertilbe loaded in good shape for $4,500. I haven't seen it in person yet. Could this be an original car? I found a copule pictures on the web of two others. I have to say they were very ugly though. Not bad with the top down but hideous when up. Anybody know if was an original option in '79 or was someone selling kits to do this?

From what I recall, they were converted T-top cars, cut up by someone like ASC. So, it didn't roll of a GM line without a top. I have seen some in person, and they are bad top up or down. They're rare, but probably an example of rare not always equaling desireable.

I saw one on ebay one time. Like someone said a "one-off" creation by ASC (or someone like that). It was so ugly you would have had to tie a pork chop around it for the dog to play with it.

ASC did them. There are some owners of them at NastyZ28.com

There where about 500 Camaros from 1979 to 1981 sent to National Coach Engineering in Port Sanilac Michigan where they were converted to convertibles. Also they did the same for the Pontiac Trans Am's. They were sent from the factory with an order form from NCE. The tops looked funny but yes they looked good when down. I am presently converting a 1980 Camaro I have to a convertible. I have the top and practically all I need to do it. I have the original order forms from NCE for ordering these convertibles. There are more pictures of Trans Am's then there are of Camaro's. Yes ASC American Sunroof Corporation did a few of these cars but the main company was NCE National Coach Eng.
