View Full Version : Full Size Spare Tire Hold Down Hook
no69x-44 Nov 9th, 07, 02:24 PM OK, I did a search on this and there is plenty of information, as it seems to be a topic that raises it head every so often. But I can't seem to find a picture of what I need. Does anybody or can some please post up a Picture of were the Full Size Spare Tire Hold Down Hook would be in the truck of a 1969 Camaro Coupe? If any one has dimensions that would also be helpful, but a picture would really be nice.
Thanks in advance.
nashcar Nov 9th, 07, 04:46 PM Rob,there are dimples in the trunk pan to locate the bracket unless you have a replacement pan maybe. I'll check in the morning and give you the location if this does'nt get answered. Steve
JohnZ Nov 9th, 07, 06:18 PM Here's an original '69 coupe setup.

Mark Rossiter Nov 9th, 07, 09:37 PM John, did GM just put a slit in the trunk mat for the hold down bracket to poke through?
Eric Kammerer Nov 9th, 07, 09:49 PM This thread has a coupe pic.

no69x-44 Nov 10th, 07, 04:58 AM Hey Guys - Thanks for the quick replies (and pics). I was aware of the dimples from previous posts, but replaced my trunk pan, so I need to double check to see if I still have them. I used to have a good picture of someones trunk with the hold down hook in it for a coupe, but I gave it to someone thinking I could always go back to print out another. Of course now I can't remember where I got it from. :clonk:

Unreal Mar 4th, 08, 08:10 AM Hey Fred,
That's a great shot of the Endura bumper bracket. I can't tell if the add on piece that surrounds the mast is painted gray, or if it's left natural.
Thanks,
PS. Just please don't tell me it's gold cad!! :)
Unreal Mar 4th, 08, 08:17 AM Also, for those who are interested, note the argent silver overspray on JohnZ's rally. That's where it sprayed through from the front side. Note how virtually all of the overspray is on the rim.
I went to great pains to try to make the overspray on mine look natural, and it does not look nearly as good as John's original! I was trying to get some spray all around the rally slots, though. I'm going to have to get the spare back out and work on it a bit.
First things first, though...I need to drop the engine back in first!

Whoa, Unreal, that was from November. Are you surfing for my gold stuff?:D That jack is original. Never been touched up. The paint on the ratchet-part is gray. Wanna see the overspray on my original spare tire wheel?
Gary L Mar 4th, 08, 09:47 PM The breaker bar and tie straps are original?
Fred Ficarra Mar 5th, 08, 12:31 PM The breaker bar and tie straps are original?
No,,,,Ya got me! But the Alpine amp is factory original!:D
Unreal Mar 5th, 08, 02:28 PM Fred,
I'm talking about the piece that is riveted on the load rest for endura bumper...is it painted gray or left natural. Also, I assume the rivet is natural, not painted blue?
I know the ratchet mechanism is painted gray, and mine is all painted up nice and purdy. I have an original load rest and a repop add-on piece that are still separate. I want to get them right before I rivet the two together.
Fred Ficarra Mar 6th, 08, 01:37 PM Unreal, I just checked it out. I've never done that. Checking-out bumper jacks is not a passtime I find rewarding.:noway:
OK, the blue part should ALL be blue. The center/recess of the rivit is blue. About 30 years ago I reassembled this thing because somebody told me it was backwards. I think it'll work the way it is. I've never used it but my son confessed to jacking up his car with it when he was in highschool in the late 80's. I just found a tweak on the jaw! I'm removing him from my will!:D
Unreal Mar 6th, 08, 05:24 PM Hey Fred......thanks for looking, but would you look again? I'm still not clear whether the squarish piece that is riveted to the load rest, and wraps around the mast is painted gray or left natural.
heartbeat sells the completed endura load rest, but I think they paint the whole thing blue. If yours is unmolested, it's verification that the add on piece was riveted to the standard load rest after it was painted. Question is whether the add on piece was painted or not.
mark x22 Mar 6th, 08, 05:34 PM the whole thing is painted .
Unreal Mar 7th, 08, 08:31 AM the whole thing is painted .
On Fred's, the add on piece is not painted, indicating that the load rest was painted PRIOR to adding the VE3 piece. But he said it had some blue in the center of the rivet, indicating that the piece was painted AFTER riveting.
I just want to get mine right the first time.
I asked a very well known restorer about it once, (he shall remain nameless, bu he's a very knowledgeable guy, who I have allot of respect for). He showed me the add on piece, which he had painted blue, but it was NOT riveted to the load rest, and said, "I've always seen it just lying loose in the trunk." Heck of a statement from a restoration expert!!
Fred Ficarra Mar 7th, 08, 06:10 PM Unreal, sorry I'm late. Whew, and I'm retired! Too many toys.
The part that's blue in the picture also has a bracket just out of sight in the picture that wraps around the mast. ALL of it is blue.

Unreal Mar 8th, 08, 09:24 AM Thanks Fred...it looked unpainted or painted light gray in the pic.
Mark.....$150, reserve not met...that's why I am planning to install the repop bracket onto my original load rest!!
Fred Ficarra Mar 8th, 08, 02:46 PM Unreal, I just took a snap of the other side of the jack. As you can tell, the original paint is getting tired. Should I repaint it?

Unreal Mar 8th, 08, 03:25 PM Wow, looks blue in that pic...wonder what I saw that looked unpainted in your earlier one? I wouldn't repaint it...I love it just as it is!
Unreal Mar 8th, 08, 03:27 PM Is that a space saver tire? Cool.
