View Full Version : Gas Tank Questions
IDS_Bill Nov 10th, 07, 10:09 PM Hey Everyone,
I am installing the fuel tank and am wondering a couple of things. I have read that the straps should either be unpainted or semi-gloss black. Any idea which it is?
Also - What ar ethe correct clamps to go around the hose to the tank filler neck.
Thanks,
Bill
sleeping beauty Aug 5th, 08, 05:15 PM I an freshing up my tank and the original straps were painted black.
Repro straps are galvinized and they say they are correct. I am not sure.
Dale8346 Aug 5th, 08, 09:36 PM Ricks FT-40 was the only one I found correct.
I bought a complete tank kit from Classic Industries and the clamps did not fit. I did not look them up, but if I remember correctly, the correct clamps are 2 1/2" You get the correct clamps with this. 2 1/2 clamps are hard to find, but I have about 5 of them. Classic gave me clamps that would never fit.
On the straps, I have heard differing opinions and I wish someone with credibility would give a definitive answer on that. It appears that the 68 were most likely Black, and that is how i remember mine. That answer seems to have a lot of credibility, but I am not sure on the 67. I would think it would be the same, but that is not how I remember it. But, I would think that the 67 & 68 would be the same.
Can someone put this question to bed with CERTAINTY??
I have removed so many gas tanks in my life, I would be afraid that I would not give an accurate answer on memory.
RamAirDave Aug 5th, 08, 09:41 PM Can't say for 67-8, but all the 69 straps I've experienced were definitely painted black.
Billy d. Aug 6th, 08, 10:05 AM I think there is a good picture of the # 3 Zl1 Camaro gas tank area in the John r. Hooper 1969 CAMARO REFERENCE BOOK FROM "A to Z" . It may be in black and white though.
I dont have it in front of me so I dont know the page number etc.
JohnZ Aug 6th, 08, 07:23 PM Production straps weren't galvanized, and it was standard practice in the assembly plants to dip-prime them black. There were also NO anti-squeak strips between the straps and the tank, although some of the vendors would have you believe there were.
:beers:
Fred Ficarra Aug 7th, 08, 10:30 AM John, help out this old brain would you?
No galvanizing on something as important as the fuel tank retention system but the wire cover under the carpet is galvanized. What's with that?!

169indy Aug 7th, 08, 07:49 PM I just worked the tank area of my 68 recently and when I removed the straps and "CLEANED" them up, scrape and blasting I could see that the black coating had many 'drips-sags' ,,,and the coating was pretty tough stuff! Gloss black looks great, & yes that- silly kit I purchased A piece of 1" foam and 30# roofing TAR paper!
No paper found under the straps!
I found Paper (Tar) on the top of the tank & wide black tape securing the gags tank gage positive lead.
Fred, you know Chebbies rust from the inside out!
Glav- fllashing on the interior
Jim
