I have seen a couple of posts on the boards talking about returning original engines to their correct cars. I was wondering if anybody had any stories that they could share about this actually happening. I would think the chances would be astronomical but with over 30,000 members and tons of experts that document lots of cars I guess it happens?

Ha! On the front page right under your post there was one that said "is it legit"? All I could think was somebody was unhappy with their new heart and did not know if they could return it... Wow it was much funnier in my head...
On the question at hand. Yes I believe it does happen.

Well it was not a Camaro, but it happened to my brother on his 63 Vette. Long story shortened, about 15 years ago a buddy of mine bought a 63 Vette with the wrong engine. We did some checking, and found a serial number on the block. I called my brother, and to the shock of all of us, it was his serial number. Both cars were basically from the same area, so I guess that was a big factor.

That' amazing! I don't care if the story is about a Camaro or another car. I just want to hear the story about how it happened and if the engine did get returned, what the owner did with it and the reaction of the owner who's engine was being returned. I think it's amazing when people find their old cars that they've once owned but to find it's original engine...WOW! If you guys have any good stories of finding your first car or that one that got away post those as well, they're always fun to hear.

Got close a couple of months ago. Have a DZ here, and it's VIN is only 400 cars away from a TC member's Z. Both are from the same area of the state, but just almost ....
