View Full Version : Wheel opening moldings
MR454SS Apr 6th, 04, 01:25 PM I was wondering if anyone has installed a set of these moldings purchaced from Year One,I tried the repop ones,{not purchaced from Year One}had to slice and dice to make them work, and the fronts are a disaster, totally unexceptable!I see now there are new GM ones for sale from Year One and was interested if the fit was easier and better before I try a set??
69rag327 Apr 6th, 04, 03:48 PM Been there, done that. Yeah, the repo stuff is crap. And I complained to Rick's and basically got a response that it is the best that is available. I hear even the NOS stuff was marginal at best. I still have mine on but I am not happy. Still, I think it looks better than not having them.
Judd Apr 11th, 04, 08:07 AM I agree. Took a lot of massaging and drilling properly spaced holes to get them to fit but, what are you gonna do? Just go slow and try to make it is as nice as possible. Good luck.
Jeff H Apr 15th, 04, 06:09 AM What screws did you guys use to attach the wheel opening moldings? I tried the screws they give you and they all strip way before they even get 1 full thread into the fender. My car has the original fenders which are really thick metal compared to the NOS and repo fenders.
69rag327 Apr 15th, 04, 03:39 PM I just used the ones supplied. Maybe my panels are not as thick. Perhaps you need to drill a little bigger hole before starting to thread? Anyway, have fun, hope yours turns out better than mine. My front moldings actually have a crease that I tried to cut and seam. It's ugly. I can't believe the sell this crap and sleep at night.
VINTAGE CAMARO Apr 15th, 04, 09:03 PM Go buy some nice stainless ones, so you don't have little orange spots on your ok chrome. That's what I do. graemlins/beers.gif
tcss396 Feb 3rd, 05, 05:03 AM my .02 I recently installed a set of Corvex wheel opening moldings, took about 40 minutes total, fit & look as good as originals, very satisfied. You have to contour the fronts a little as you go regarding the compound angle of the fender and only drill 2 holes over approx. 3/4"- 1" to line up to the cars holes graemlins/waving.gif , but it goes no problem
foreverlookin Feb 3rd, 05, 10:22 AM Vintage what stainless brand do you recommend?
MR454SS Feb 3rd, 05, 12:28 PM This is a update to my question,I did buy a set of 3 gm moldings from D&R ,2 fronts, drivers side rear, passenger side rear unavailable, the 3 from D&R were a easy fit and I ended up using 1 convex on passenger side rear and it fit fine, problem I had was on the fronts on the convex brand,I have goodmark fenders and quarters.
Mr. C Feb 3rd, 05, 01:30 PM All 3 that Mr454SS talked about are stil available from GM, Right Rear has been discontinued.
bbd564 Feb 4th, 05, 12:45 PM Anyone have a part number for a gm left rear for a 68? Thanks
HwyStarJoe Feb 4th, 05, 01:33 PM GM Parts Direct doesn't list any wheel opening moldings for the '67 or '68. Only the '69 and then only the fronts and left rear. No right rear.

jus4funn68 Feb 6th, 05, 05:39 AM Who sells Corvex moldings? Kevin
kz1000ltd Feb 6th, 05, 05:45 AM Almost all the reproduction places sell the Corvex brand, I know you can get them at Firewheelclassics.com..........KZ
Handy69Z Feb 8th, 05, 08:35 PM Hey.... Vintage Camaro... where did you get the stainless steel wheel opening moulding. I don't care what they cost.. as long as the fit nice and are polished to look like chrome!!!!
csn69ss Feb 8th, 05, 09:37 PM I just installed a set of the repros that I bought from Ricks First Gen, I have to say the front ones were really hard to install - they fitted like crap - had to drill, cut and grind to make the holes fit. Some holes didn't even fit remotely so a new one had to be drilled. Also the material seems really thin. My front fenders are original GM.
As for the rearones they fit alot better and I used the screws supplied with the kit - drilled 3.2mm holes and it worked well. My rearquarter lips had been repaired in the past so the org. holes were gone.
I also installed the rocker panel moulding OEM quality from Ricks and they were a great fit - the inner steelbar holes fit exactly to my holes in the rockers (never been replaced).
It came out like this:

Big Sky 68Z28 Feb 10th, 05, 11:49 AM I agree that the wheel opening moldings are plain crappy as a lot of repro parts are.
