You bought a car with no vin tag and no title?

Nothing seemed fishy about that ?>

Eddie, I am no expert in this kind of thing but I think the thing to do firstly is to find out what the VIN number is from the seller. If he or she is not forthcoming then you will have to check the hidden VINs, find those and do a title search. I think most states will offer this service at their local DMV or equivalent. I was recently told that my state of NC charges 10 bucks to do this.

I would be extremely skeptical of buying any vehicle without a title.

Eddie, imo you will have to locate the hidden VINs and attempt to figure out what the VIN is....then contact NC DMV. As long as the car was last titled in NC they can track down the previous owner's name and location. If the car was last registered out of state you can look around and find a service to help you.

Good luck, and beware buying cars with no title.

Did the seller ever have it registered? Some states don't require a title, and will use the previous registration in lieu of it.

You have to be very careful with that kind of a situation. Because of theft laws most states are not willing to just re-issue a new vin and new title. It's a process that can sometimes be very long and agonizing. Please tell me the guy had a bill of sale or something showing that he actually owned the car.
Attached is a thread that was posted about a guy in a similar situation.

Eddie, I feel your pain, we have essentially ended up in the same boat though by different routes ( :yes:Im the guy that Johns link points to.) Anyhow, first thing I recommend doing is locating the hidden VINs and heading to the DMV to begin the necessary investigation on the VIN and start the title search (you wont go anywhere without it, plus you dont want to sink $ into it to later find out it was stolen.) Hopefully NC has a better record mgt system than VA, so dont go in expecting immediate results as I had. Secondly, once you obtain the last registered owners info you will need to work with them to obtain a copy of the title to transfer ownership to you; assumming the last guy didnt actually register the car. (heres your catch 22, the VIN is missing, so transferring ownership will be difficult as removing the VIN is illegal and Im not sure of the NC law...going thru that issue myself as well in VA) So good luck, my thoughts are with you and please keep me posted on your progress, and know your not alone in this nightmare. (Heres an idea, once we get our respective issue resolved, finish up our restorations, and celebrate over a beer :beers:. What the heck, invite the whole TC community.)

Eddie, like the guys said make sure the car is not stolen before you spend any money on it. Getting a title here in NC is a pain. The DMV will give you what you need to get started, it is a long process. In our state it will have to be a running and road worthy car inspected by a state trooper. Then you can finish the paper work to get it titled. I have been told that NC will not except a title from a title service, you check on that I am not sure.
Anyway hope you the best, the guys on here know everything about our cars.

can somebody post a pic or link to a pic where exactly the hidden VINs are found? I have my car where it is kinda accessible and I would like to check just for peace of mind-
