Personally I wouldn't pay $1,100 for it. In Southern California you can pull a BBC from a junk yard for about $200, and normally they too just need freshening. You should take any engine to a machine shop before building it IMHO and the cost will vary depending on what needs done. With an initial cost of $1,100, it's gonna cost you quite a bit by the time it's done. To give you an idea, I just built a 427 out of a 454 block. The machine shop bill was $2500. This price was not just for the machine work. Included was the gasket set, forged pistons, hardened seat installation, etc..etc. It all depends on what "freshened up" means, and what you want from a powerplant. If you would like, I could find my receipt from the machine shop tommorow, and break down the costs for you so you get an idea where you stand with this.

He's got an extra number in the assembly stamp; should only be four numbers after the T and before the suffix.

Could possibly be a restamp, and he could be trolling for an SS454 Chevelle or Monte buyer. If it's original, it is an LS5 block.

CPD 1971 Chevrolet 454 365 Mt LS-5
CPD 1972 Chevelle 454 270 TH LS-5
CPD 1971 Chevelle 454 365 Mt LS-5
CPD 1972 Chevrolet 454 270 TH LS-5
CPD 1971 Monte Carlo 454 365 Mt LS-5
CPD 1972 Monte Carlo 454 270 TH LS-5

But, partial VIN is weird too. 11G161592

He probably misread the heads, 336781 1973-85 454 Open 113.0cc
So, they aren't original. The 781's are decent iron oval port heads. Google the casting number I posted, and there's a lot of feedback and tips.

Intake is probably "right" for the block.

$1,100 seems like a lot, but I haven't looked for a junkyard 454 in NM recently.

Thanks guys. I thought he was high but thought with all the hype about the 512 block it might be worth looking into. The engine is about an hour away from me so I havent seen it in person, just spoke to him on the phone. I had this crazy idea of building a 496 and thought this might be a good platform.

Thanks Again,
Nick

A 512 block IS a desirable block. Even a 2 bolt main. According to you it also has all the internals and needs freshening up. Depending on the condition of the heads it doesen't sound too bad to me.

Looks like Ca. long blocks are alot cheaper than East Coast long blocks.

It's cheaper because you have to pull it yourself. I'm sure that there are places on the East Coast where you could get them for that price. I'm from Connecticut, and if I'm not mistaken, we had a place in Bridgeport where you get get them for about that. Of course I've been away from there for 7 years, so it might be different now.

I don't know of any Pick and Pull yards here in CT.anymore. Probably due to insurance. Now you tell em what you want and pick it up at the desk.
Still, out here any BB longblock is going to 5-$600.00 minimum. Usually that much just for a block and crank.
