I have a 1968 camaro convertible with a pumped up
427 big block dated 1969.
I also have been wanting a 1963 through 1967
corvette.
Like most,I have to sell a toy to buy a toy.
Do you know what the value of my car would be?
How about just the 427 alone?
My 427 block casting number is #3955270
http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t75/TGA_01/100_2443.jpg
It is bored & balanced (bored + .03 over...433 cid)
The heads casting numbers are #3872702
http://s157.photobucket.com/albums/t75/TGA_01/100_2452.jpg
The heads are 1967 heads that are ported & have
Manley over sized valves & 1.70 erson roller
rockers & screw in studs.

This motor,I was told by the guy I bought it
from 5 years ago that it has a Lunati bracket master
solid-lifter cam.It does have a pretty radical lope to
it.
It also has a Edelbrock "preformer 2.0" intake that
he said has been ported(as well as the heads),a Holly
750 cfm carb with duel feed,a Mallory "unilight" HEI
ignition & Black jack headders.
It is supposed to be pumped up to 450 + horse power.

I have been thinking about selling this car...or
just selling the 427 by itself, putting a roller small
block (I have sitting in my garage) in this 68 rag top
& then selling this car for money to buy a old
corvette.
Here is the options on the 1968 rag top:
It is an early 1968 camaro convertible. This car was
suppose to be a SS (according to the guy I bought it
from)It Did have an original SS gas cap but I put an
RS cap & RS badges on it when I made it an RS clone. It
does have the original console gauges, but they are not
hooked up now. Whether it really was an SS I couldn't
tell, but it does NOT have the tic tock tach.In it's
place is a basic fuel gauge.
Below are the options it does have however the
pictures looked better on a CD I burned then on
"photo bucket".
Original top(starting to fall apart now)
http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t75/TGA_01/100_2485.jpg
Top frame is rust free & is a Power top but missing
pump & rams.
http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t75/TGA_01/100_2474.jpg
2nd coat of paint(factory coat was bolero red)The
current coat(2nd coat ever,is old black lacquer & has
some serious lacquer check.)
This car has the deluxe interior:
Cloth seats & the fold down rear seat option with
wood grain dash trim & an un-cut dash in perfect shape
with the original am radio.

The biggest draw back of this 68 rag top for
re-sale is probabily the fender flairs.I always liked
them, but this was big in my era.
It also needs new paint & a new top.
It is registered & running & has a clean California
title in my name.
I have other options such as putting the 427 in a
1969 rs coupe I am working on.If I put it in the
69 rs coupe & make a Baldwin or a yenko clone,then I
could sell this camaro & get into an old corvette.
Or I could just sell the 69 the way it is & sell the
427 by itself & keep the 68 camaro rag top.
I am trying to decide what is my best option to keep
a camaro & still get into a "mid year" corvette.
Both are los angels cars & have been in calif all
there life from what I have been told. Both are rust
free.
I really should get educated about the
value of my camaros before I sell one of them.
If you have any Ideas in this,I would love to get
all the info I could.

Thank you for your time...Tom

I thought I would respond to my post to bring it to the forefront again.
Can anyone give a ball park figure on this car before I sell it for a song & a dance?
Thankyou for your time...Tom

Whole car I'm thinking 9K to 12K, maybe a little more due to the RS feature. Love the motor, but car needs a lot of work. Good luck.

Boy, this is a hard one to call.

Does the 427 have any stampings left on the front pad, or has it been decked. If it still had an assembly stamp and partial VIN, and it's a Vette motor, or could be used in a COPO tribute, it's might be worth more. As it sits, the motor is probably $2K or so depending on any other numbers, how much someone wants a 69 427, etc.

The flares, the paint, the top, the roll bar, the seats, the way the subframe connectors were done... none of that helps the sale value for the car. If the car is rust free, and the flares were just glassed on and the fenders and quarters are basically intact under there, it's a step or two above the rusty drivers you see sell for $9K or so. So if you sell it as a roller and it is solid, it's probably anywhere from $5k to $10K, depending on how the potential buyer feels about it when he checks it out. There is a lot of work there.

Thankyou all for your time & responses.
The block unfortunatly has been decked. This car is solid, but the fenders have been cut when the flairs were added.I know this does bring the "collector" value down some.
I could be wrong, but it seems the prices here in Califorina for camaros are a little higher then back east.
Iv'e seen basket case convertible projects going for close to the prices quoted here at the local car swapmeets in Califorina...& they are selling!
Camaros seem to be really hot out here right now.
I realize this is a modifyed car & is not fully restored yet,but Is there any other guesses at what this car is worth? Anyone out here on the west coast?
mabey I am wrong, but I thought it would be worth a little more.
I hope I am not upsetting anyone for my west coast request & I really do thank you for your time.
Thanks again...Tom

Tom, what do YOU think it's worth as it sits, with the small block, and as a roller?

How bad are the floor pans, trunk pan, and shock towers?

What's the first part of the VIN?

Tom Ashmead

The floor pans, trunk pans, & shock towers are rust free & in excelent shape.
The first part of the vin is the same as for any other factory (Not copo) rag top (12467)
I have never seen or heard or a 427 in a rag top before...only 396 convertibles.
This car is as solid as a rock with the subframe connectors & the roll bar.
A bit of histroy...
This car was also a test car for a company called "fuel curve engeneering" in southren Califorina quite a few years ago,who tested carborator designs until they got a dyno!
I am not sure if I had showed any pictures of it,but there is a sticker on the drivers side valve cover that has the company's name & phone number. As I recall, the previous owner of this car had worked for Edelbrock before branching off.
I have got a response from a "team camaro" member who reconized this car & knows the former owner personally. He was nice enough to contact me & hopefully give me more information... or better yet, pass the word on to the former owner & hopefully he will contact me.Then I might know more of the history of this car (such as...who built the transmission E.T.C.)
This team camaro member mentioned that the engeneers of the company would come up with a new design & test it with this car on the strip.I remember this information from my conversation with the previous owner at the time I was buying this car.
I am not sure what the car would be worth without the 427....I am not sure I want to seperate the car & engine because of the history it has.I am not sure I really want to sell the car at all.
I have even thought about trying to contact "HOTROD" magizne becaust they have run the articals called "barn finds" recentily."Barn finds" is a series about old & un-touched hotrods & muscel cars.
This car really is a time warp from the 1970s!
All this, just to ask for all the input I can get...What do you guys think it is worth?
I know this is NOT a gold mine....& I am not sure I want to part with it...But I am curious of everyone's opinions.
Thankyou all for your time.Again I DO NOT think this is worth a fortune, & I DO THANK everyone there opinion...On both sides of this great country.
Thankyou again...Tom

Tom, the VIN prefix is not the same on all Camaro convertibles. They can start with 12367 or 12467. COPO is never coded in the VIN.
This car is not an original SS or RS, not a black plate car, floor pans have been cut and modified, missing many original parts, and needs alot of work.
The 427 isn't original and doesn't really add any value more than any other NOM big block.
Most guys here lean towards valuing cars with originality, which is probably why you are getting the estimates you are.

It's an interesting car for sure, and if you can find any history or magazine articles on the car, that might help the value. It might also appeal to the "Rat Rod" crown as is.

Thankyou for all your input...
I am wondering if my best option for generateing money to but an old corvette would be yo put the '69 427 in the '69 "real" RS camaro I am currentily working on.
This car is an orginal RS & was started from the ground up,had 1 quarter replaced & the other lower part(by the "louvers") replaced.
This guy I got it from did a good job.He then put it on a rotissrie & sand blasted it & epoxie painted the bottom & blasted the inside.
I have taken it from there & been trying to put the puzzle back together.
Right now I have a small block with the casting 391010 in the car that is not hot,but not stock eather. It is NOT a numbers macthing car.It also has a m-20 from a '74 vette. I bought the video & re-built it just recentily. It has a '67 10 bolt with 3.36 gears & an Eaton posi carrier.
Would it be worth more if I put the '69 427 & the '67 12 bolt out of the rag top in this
'69?
Would it be worth the time & trouble?
What do you guys see as my best option to keep a camaro & still scrounge money to get into a corvette project?
Thanks again for your time...Tom
