i am placing an SS gascap on my car that i got from classic industries. it has a ring on the inside so when you unscrew it the cap can hang and it doesnt fall or you dont lose it etc... however there is a bolt that it comes with, which secures the ring, but i dont see anywhere on the neck filler or surrounding area where the bolt should go. anyone know that can shoot me some ideas? we replaced the rear vallance so if there were any factory holes theyre not there now, so if you could throw me anything it would help. especially pictures! thanks!

i removed one of the screws that mounted the filler neck to the valance and attached it to that location. i taped the screw hole making it a little bit larger

You may have to make some small slits in the gas filler neck to turn the cap when it locks in so the SS is straight and not cock-eyed.

The hole should be at about 7-8 o'clock if you're looking at it from outside. Also the cap starts on almost upside down and rotates clockwise tillits on right side up...it gets tighter as you rotate up which is by design...at least that was the way mine was and its a classic industries cap also

yup, it uses the upper drivers side filler neck hole, replacing that screw.

Just to be clear the slits would be in the 4 holes for the bolts to go through.....

Mike I'll take a look at mine tomorrow. I've got an original 68 SS 350 with the what I believe may be the original cap. I don't remember it mounting by a screw, but rather a round small dowel that rotates and the cable loop passes through it. I may not be remembering it right, it's been over a year since I've had to put fuel in the car. I'll see if I can shoot a pic and get it to you.

On my 68 there is bolt on the lower left with a different head ( round with a hole in it ) that the cable passes thru .

I guess no need for pics. Same as everyone else is posting lower left hole is where the shouldered stud goes through and the cable passes through the shouldered portion.

The correct hole is the bottom left
That's what the '67 AIM shows also.

I’m not absolutely sure why they put a cable on the cap but it wasn’t uncommon in the late 60’s for teenagers to have a muscle car gas cap collection if you catch my drift…:D

It was probably not entirely an anti-theft measure. I'm sure there were (and still are) numerous instances of absent-minded drivers forgetting to replace their gas cap after fueling up. We've all seen photos on the internet of cars driving around with a gas pump hose dangling from the fuel fill opening. Having a cable attached to the cap not only inhibited theft, but it made it impossible to leave the cap sitting on top of the pump at the gas station.
