View Full Version : Temp idiot light wont come on prior to starting?
cgrady Nov 24th, 07, 05:40 PM So my alternator belt fell off causing over heating (not too bad), but enough that the idiot light should of came on.....the GEN light worked as it should.....
i did some checking and the GEN, OIL, and TEMP lights should all come on with ignition on prior to starting...the TEMP fails to come on. i grounded the sender wire and TEMP light comes on, so i know it works.
i bought and put in new sender, but light still wont come on with ignition turned on.......hopefully it will work if gets hot again tho.
Any idea's why wont come on along with OIL and GEN prior to starting?
sorry for the lengthly question, chad
JimM Nov 24th, 07, 06:51 PM It's wired that way. The bulb test for the temp light happens in "crank" not run. If it doesn't light when the engine is cranking, the bulb is most likely burned out.
cgrady Nov 24th, 07, 07:15 PM thx Jim, ill check that out.....the bulb diff works....so ill look closer when cranking when i get home.
cgrady Nov 24th, 07, 08:12 PM so i just chked my autozone sender replacement and see that it replicates a gauges sender, not the non-gauge sender as i have no gauges.....will it still light up idiot light when reaches temp?....or do i need to buy a non-gauge sender to activate idiot light?
go2fast Nov 24th, 07, 09:15 PM so i just chked my autozone sender replacement and see that it replicates a gauges sender, not the non-gauge sender as i have no gauges.....will it still light up idiot light when reaches temp?....or do i need to buy a non-gauge sender to activate idiot light?
You need a non-gauge sender. Before you replace it, ground the wire going to it and see if the light comes on. That will tell you if the bulb and wiring are OK.
JimM Nov 24th, 07, 09:17 PM does it light when cranking?
If it doesn't, there's probably nothing wrong with the sender you took out.
cgrady Nov 24th, 07, 09:38 PM thx guys, im not at home......but both senders light up when grounded...i bought the only choice i had at Autozone and noticed it had different connector than one i had....chked Rick's and saw there are two destinct kinds "non" and "gauge", so i need "non" from go2fast's advice.........the orginal sender didnt work when hot enough to spew anti-free out over flow tube.
cgrady Nov 24th, 07, 11:26 PM the light doesnt come on during crank, but im running this new "gauge" sender, so looks like ill have to buy "non-gauge" sender and redue crank test. i broke the old plastic top when taking off, so not only did it not work, it is now broken to even test. oh well, ill re-post when get the new "non-gauge"
JimM Nov 25th, 07, 06:17 AM The sender won't effect the crank test.
cgrady Nov 25th, 07, 09:46 AM hmmm, the light for sure works when grounded.........a mechanic friend of mine said the car may have a circuit board behind the dash? is there a seperate wire from the ignition for crank test? sorry im electrically challanged (putting in a radio is a feat for me:))
JimM Nov 25th, 07, 09:54 AM No, same wire on the circuit board. There are 2 green wires coming off that pin on the harness connector that plugs into the circuit board, one to the sender, one to the ignition switch for the bulb test.
Ground the sender wire again, make sure the bulb lights up. If it does, maybe not worry about the bulb test for now.
Note: my specific experience on this is on a 68. Possible but not likely that 67's are different. 67 schematics show same same, 2 dk green wires, one to temp sender, one to ignition switch.
cgrady Nov 25th, 07, 12:49 PM ok, thx for the help Jim.
