Those numbers are exactly that -- the casting number. Once the casting arrived at Saginaw Steering Gear it was machined. Then parts were assembled into the machined housing creating unique gear assembly part numbers for specific models of vehicles. One of the real unique features of the Saginaw power steering gears is that they can be interchanged over a period of 30 to 40 years. The mounting pads and the gear housing shape remained exactly the same from the mid 1960s through the early 2000s. So all of these gears will bolt right up to your frame. (The gear input shaft became smaller in 1977; the gear ports changed from flare fittings to metric o-ring in 1980.) There are adapter parts available for these changes. This paper may be of value. http://jimshea.corvettefaq.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/08/af-carfastratiogearrev08au07.doc There are several excel spreadsheets that list production gear part numbers along with numerous fast ratio gears that can be interchanged. You will need to go to: www.corvettefaq.com click on Jim Shea's Steering Articles click on A & F-Car Steering Papers The above paper and the spread sheets are right at the top of the listings.
